With dating, friendships, writing, banking, businesses, and pretty much anything else you can imagine being offered online, it's no wonder that education has taken the plunge as well. Yet when it comes to getting an education that will influence your future job prospects and earning potential, it's important to make sure that the online education that you are receiving will deliver everything that traditional schools have. One recent report shows just how prevalent fraudulent online colleges are:

The 'Accredibase Report' is the result of an 18-month international research project by Eyal Ben Cohen and Rachel Winch of Verifile Limited, one of the leading background screening firms in the United Kingdom . . . Report co-author Ben Cohen says: "We have so far identified 1,762 fake institutions, and we are still investigating a further 1,545 currently filed as ‘suspicious' before publishing them on the 'Accredibase' database."1

So how do you know what schools are legitimate and which ones aren't? And how do you know that online education is the right thing for you?

To determine whether an online college is legitimate, start with common sense. If their claims seem too good to be true, they likely are. That means that if there is little required coursework or degrees are given based on your prior experience, you should be wary.

Another way to determine whether an online college or university is legitimate is through checking the college's accreditation. The United States Department of Education provides a list of accrediting agencies that it recognizes. In order to become a recognized agency, the agencies must complete a recognition process that involves a number of steps determined by the Department of Education. The Department of Education web site has a list of accredited institutions available for those who are interested in confirming that the online college they are considering is accredited. This list is available at ope.ed.gov/accreditation/.

Like any university or college, most online colleges have a variety of degree programs available. They range the spectrum from certificates to doctoral degrees, and are available in many different fields. Some colleges specialize in certain degrees, such as Abilene Christian University; ACU focuses on graduate degrees in education and business, with teaching based on a Christian worldview.

The cost of online college is relatively comparable to that of traditional school. While the per-unit cost tends to be higher (around $700 to $900 per 3-unit course for an undergraduate degree), the overall cost is about the same because many of the expenses of traditional college don't apply (such as gas, room and board, and parking).

The style of learning varies depending on the college you attend, the degree you are studying for, and the level of that degree. Most Master's level degrees (especially in business) are completed using cohorts. Another thing to consider is the style of the classes themselves. While most of the courses will involve using the internet, the individual course styles vary depending on whether they use synchronous or asynchronous communication. Asynchronous communication often relies on emails, discussion boards, webinars, and webcasts.

Before you decide to pursue your degree using this tool, take into consideration your learning style, the time that you have available, the needs of your particular field, and the money that you have available. Once you have this information, you can put together an action plan for either an online or traditional college education.
