So much hype and talk have been going around the entertainment industry these past few weeks. The talk of the industry is all about record-breaking hits; which movie made it as the top grossing film to date?

In record, the top grossing film of all time is the movie Titanic. If you haven't heard of it or seen it, well, you must be missing at least one half of your life. Everyone fell in love with Jack and Kate, two ill-starred young couple who fell in love aboard an ill-fated ship called the Titanic. It's supposed to be a true story based on facts narrated by a survivor of the ship. Well, they came out with the movie version with a love angle complete with a good script , music theme, screenplay and special effects.

Now here comes a new movie said to be the big threat to dislodge Titanic. The movie - Avatar is a 3D version movie that is highly a modern one, fully animated, (with some exceptions in the first parts where the casts were humans) action, science fiction and love story rolled into one with a good screenplay, music theme, great special effects and a screenplay that evolved about love, friendship and loyalty. It involves Jake from the human world who becomes an avatar and Neytiri, an avatar whom Jake has fallen for.

Both movies are produced by James Cameron. If comparisons are made about the earnings of both movies, it goes without saying that both movies did very well at the box office. But then, more people insist that Avatar is about to topple Titanic from its top place as the highest grosser of all time. Maybe, but then maybe not, and you have to take in many considerations why people have come to such conclusion.

Titanic was shown in 1997. Consider the movie ticket prices then which were less than five dollars according to records based on research. With Avatar, the present prices are certainly higher, in a regular viewing costing as much as 8-12 dollars. This may be an important factor why Avatar may earn more at the box office.

Back in 1997, we didn't have social media outlets such as Face book, Twitter, Friendster and others. That is a disadvantage for Titanic, which relied mostly on movie critics and some word of mouth from movie goers. With Avatar, not only did word of mouth from the movie goers help gain more popularity, the onset of social media networks like Face Book, Twitter and others greatly helped its promotion and advertising all over the world. The film piracy did not really affect the gross earnings of Avatar; it may even have helped in promoting it better.

Regardless, we are all lucky to have both movies in our lifetime. We are all witnesses to the improvement of the entertainment industry, the new innovations about film making and the continuing saga of making feel-good- movies for the viewing public.

The good thing about movies is that they are there to entertain us and for us to appreciate another form of art that has created a good form of entertainment for all of us to enjoy during our life time.
