Insomnia is a sleeping problem where in a person is unable to sleep or having a hard time to fall asleep compared to a regular person who sleeps at least 6-8 hrs as required. It can cause health problems later on if neglected. Practical solutions have been used such as establishing a regular sleeping pattern, a good diet, breathing exercises, meditation or yoga to help the body relax and induce sleep.

If you have the problem of not falling asleep, being awake in the wee hours of the morning and having to sleep almost only about a few hours, chances are you have insomnia. This is a problematic condition for some people because lack of sleep can be dangerous to one's health. If you neglect this problem, you are liable to have more health problems later on. That is why many health practitioners have resolved to devise good and helpful ways to prevent this condition, or at least reduce it to its minimum effects.

A good and well-balanced diet is recommended, mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat and fish. Too many sweets, fatty foods and those derived from flour should be avoided. Too much salt in foods is not good either, minimize or do away with salts in your diet. Chocolates, coffee, tea, sodas and other carbonated drinks should be taken in moderation. More water or health drinks like vegetable juices and fruit juices with no sugar are recommended. Avoid other foods which contain additives and preservatives. Choose more green vegetables and herbs to be included in your daily diet.

Try eating more lettuce as it is rich in substances that help encourage sleep. You can boil about one tbsp of lettuce seeds in half a liter of water, reduce it some more and cool down for a few minutes; you can drink this before going to bed and it has calming effects similar to that of a sedative. You can also try drinking milk with some honey at least an hour before bedtime to induce sleep. Milk may also be utilized to massage the soles of your feet to help you relax more.

Make some gourd juice and some drops of sesame oil, mix well and massage into your scalp. This is also an effective way to help bring about sleep. You can also try to make some tea by boiling about one tsp of anise seeds and simmering it for about 15 minutes, then strain the seeds and you can drink the liquid combined with honey. This can be done after each meal or an hour before going to bed.

Remember to practice good sleeping habits. Keep in mind not to take afternoon naps; don't make it a habit as this would offset your sleeping pattern. Make your room a good place to sleep. Make it comfortable, take away clutter and minimize noise surroundings so you would be able to relax and fall asleep. Use ear plugs to minimize the noise around you. Try to program your body to relax and fall as sleep by sticking to a regular routine. Try to sleep on a regular time and set up a regular sleep schedule for your body to get accustomed to. Try to do regular exercises in the afternoons. Make sure to get more sunlight during the day to keep you energized. Try to limit your activities at mid-day or early evening so you won't feel any anxiety strain. Doing breathing exercises, meditation and yoga exercises may also help you relax and prop you up to induce sleep.

Good sleep is always part of a good healthy regimen. Your body needs it to rest, restore your bodily functions and to keep you healthy. Insomnia can be prevented and it is just sticking to practical solutions and preventions that you now know of.
