October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the United States. This is a month of the year that is set aside to help raise awareness of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that 192,370 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year in the United States alone. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, aside from skin cancer.

With so many women being personally affected by breast cancer, it would seem unnecessary to have an entire month dedicated to make the public aware and informed about the disease. However, despite the knowledge that people have about the disease, the prevalence of breast cancer makes it necessary to continue educating both women and men about early diagnosis and treatment options, as well as to encourage people to donate financially to help fund cancer research.

Cancer is a disease that causes cells to stop their orderly reproduction, and to begin dividing and multiplying in a disorderly fashion. These excess cells form tumors. The tumors themselves can be benign or malignant. A benign tumor is one that does not threaten other areas of the body. A benign tumor can usually be removed without fear of damage to other areas of the body. If a tumor is malignant, however, the tumor grows and invades other areas of the body. It can spread quickly into other organs and tissues, hampering or halting the function of the body. For this reason, malignant tumors need to be treated.

There are a few different treatment options available to people with breast cancer: surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy among the most popular. In surgery, the woman is operated upon with the hopes of removing the cancerous cells. The tumor is removed, and usually another portion of tissue is removed to test whether or not the cancer has spread to other areas of the body. If that test shows that the cancer has spread, another surgery may be scheduled or other treatment options may be discussed.

Radiation therapy uses high-level radiation to kill the cancer cells or to hinder their growth. Many times, this therapy is used after surgery has been performed. The goal of radiation therapy is to reduce the chance of the cancer returning. Radiation therapy involves many days or weeks of visits to the treatment facility. Once there, a radiologist will perform the treatment on you. You won't feel anything during the treatment.

Another kind of treatment that is used is chemotherapy. In chemotherapy, drugs are used to slowly kill off the cancer cells. Chemotherapy specifically targets the cancer cells, but it travels throughout the entire body, so it is especially effective for ensuring that any cancer that has spread outside of the breasts has been treated. Chemotherapy treatments are given orally or intravenously and can last up to a year.

There are many organizations that are committed to continuing research and funding for breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is one of the most well-known and productive organizations fighting for a cure. It began when Susan's sister promised Susan that she would do everything in her power to fight the disease. Though Susan lost her battle with breast cancer, millions of people have joined the movement to help save lives, ensure quality care for all women dealing with this issue, and energize science to find the cures. In addition, over $1.5 billion has been raised in her memory and for those who are fighting their own battle with breast cancer.
