Being a Single Parent and how to handle StressBY: Eve | Category: Others | Post Date: 2009-11-27
As a single parent you have many responsibilities to take care of your family. The feeling can be depressing and lonely and most times it can be stressful, too. You are solo in taking care and providing for the family and you don't have anyone to help you do this. There are situations that you just need the time to slow down and think of convenient ways to handle stress. By learning to properly address your problem about stress you would be able to live your life better for you and your family. Take care of yourself by engaging in activities you are happy doing so. Learn to have time for yourself. You can hire a babysitter to take care of the kids or ask some relatives to assist you. Go out and have a nice time with close friends. Have a beauty treatment for yourself by going to the salon or going to the mall. It's necessary to have your own time to yourself to keep you energized. Make it a good habit to do this regularly. Try to laugh and have bonding time with your family by exchanging jokes or playing fun games. Watch a funny show or movie or read something funny together. Laughing can help reduce stress and make things easier for you to handle later on. Since stress can make you feel more depressed it might help if you practice some calming methods to avoid such situations. Make it a habit to practice deep breathing and think of things to calm you down if you are feeling stressed out. Thinking about positive and good things will help pacify you. Things that make you feel light and good like smelling flowers and imagining walking near the sea or ocean are some thoughts that you can think of and process in your mind. Have the time to share good conversations with your kids. Try to actively listen to their problems and feelings and encourage open communication with them. This way you both would be aware of any problems and you can come up with solutions. As much as you talk and laugh with them try to reinforce discipline in your kids. Let them be aware of your situation as a family so they would be able to assist you in their own way by being good kids. You can also get a support system to help you go through life as a single parent. You can talk to your family, relatives or join a group composed of single parents like you who gather together regularly. You can share problems and solutions and help each other handle your roles as single parents. You can learn to combat stress if you accept it as a part of your life. You just have to accept the situation of being a single parent and learning to forgive yourself for not making life as perfect as you may have wanted it to be. Stress is in your life because you allow it to be. If you have a more positive outlook in your life and let things go as they are because you can't help it, then you just learn to let go and move on. That is a realistic and sensible way to handle stress.
