Can a Woman Survive while 'Balancing' Work and Family?BY: Guest | Category: Women | Post Date: 2010-02-02
Since the feminist movement began, women have taken on the task of balancing work and family. While the convenience of daycare, the high salaries available, and the lifestyle that comes from two incomes are enticing, many women have found that their lives seem somewhat out of whack when they take all things into consideration. When you have children, there is an inherent challenge in spending your time away from them for a bulk of your week (whether that is due to work, hobbies, or other relationships). The key term that keeps surfacing in our culture when this issue is addressed is 'balance.' What does it take to truly balance your life between work and family? Someone once said that being a mom is like taking your heart out and letting it walk around on its own. The love that a mother feels for her child is not only obvious to any sane person who is a mother, but has also been the subject of many different stories and mythologies that transcend time and culture. The rub comes when a woman takes on both work and family. All of a sudden, her focus is split between two major areas of her life. And while it would be convenient to be able to focus on work while she is at work and focus on her family when she is with her family, most women find that they can focus on neither work nor family completely because both issues are constantly in mind. Another issue that comes up is child care. If you are spending your time at work forty to fifty hours per week, where are your children? Even if your company provides great child care or if you have relatives who live nearby and are able to help out, nothing compares to having the mom or dad take care of their own children. As Doctor Laura Schlesinger has said, 'If you're going to have them, raise them.' This being said, there are benefits to working. One of the most obvious benefits is the income that is generated. This can help alleviate the stress of the family budget and can allow your family to live in a safer area or get a better education. Some studies have also shown that working women tend to have a healthier family because the mom has time to decompress from family life, use her talents and skills in other areas, and develop a social life that is not entirely made up of five-year-olds. The key to making either situation work is knowing your values and your personality. If you want to stay home with your children, it may take moving into a smaller house or apartment, shopping at thrift stores or 99 cent stores, and not taking family vacations. If you want to work and raise your kids, you might need to get creative in your job selection. Finding a work-from-home job that is part time may give you the challenge you crave while allowing your children to grow up with their parent as their primary caregiver. You may also choose to delay your career for a few years until your children start school; at that point you can work close to full time, without sacrificing the time that you have with your children (they will be in school anyway). The decision of whether to work or to stay at home with your children may be a tough one. If your situation isn't what you want it to be, get creative in your options. Envision what your ideal life would look like, and then take concrete steps in that direction. Always keep in mind the end goal. Your kids are worth it.
