If you want to reach your goals, then you do everything to get it done. It may also mean taking risks, some calculated risks that you must really be ready to struggle with, take advantage of or simply let go. That said, you must also be able to carefully weigh all your options before taking the big leap. Just what are these career risks that you have to take? First, there is that thought of going back to school. This is a career risk for you because you would be working at the same time and going back to school for additional educational credits to your name like a Masters or PhD degree. You have to consider also your family time and responsibilities especially if you are married. Try to weigh your options by thinking of good reasons why you have to go back to school; is it for promotion, more money earning opportunities or you are considering a career path that may need this kind of education? Then, make sure that you would get what you want as the end result of your reasons for going back to school, if these are supported by your superiors at work, then good, because that would be a realization of your goal of earning more and getting the promotion you want. You must also realize that some additional degrees can be considered in promotions at work, but then in some jobs, it makes no difference at all. So make sure, that you know if your going back to school would be worth it after all. You take the risk of changing your career. A change of career always comes into mind especially if you are unhappy and not satisfied with your work. To weigh your options about this risk, do your research and find out what kind of work you really want. Make use of your skills and strengths and your interests in finding a job that suits you well. Know about the salaries, privileges and other data of the job you are interested in. Don't let go of your present job just of yet; just find the time to search for the job you want. In case you have decided to leave the job because you are really unhappy about it, then it may be a risk worth taking. Another career risk is saying ‘No' or you refuse more responsibilities in your job. If you accept added responsibilities knowing full well that you would be getting a promotion for it or a good salary increase, then do so willingly. If you are in doubt, with no promises of such privileges, then you just have to think matters over. Use your common sense, or trust your instincts that if you accept more responsibilities, if these would be good for you or if taking these added responsibilities would really move you up for promotion later on. The next career risk is starting your own business. But then, some are having second thoughts because of fear of failure or losing investments. There is also the risk of losing employee benefits such as retirement benefits, health insurance care and getting a regular monthly salary. If you plan to set up your business, you must first make a research about the business you are interested in, make a business plan, save money and try setting up your business contacts. You can also try getting some part time work in a small business to get the feel of the work. Having your own business may always be a risk, but then you lesser the odds by making the right preparations like having a good business plan and definite goals to make the business a success. It is up to you if you are willing to take any career risks. It is a matter of choice of being satisfied with your career or not. You may take some risks because you know the positive end results would be worth it. If not, then you may just stay put and let put those risks to rest.
