Copenhagen Summit for Climate Change- Our First Major Step towards saving our RaceBY: DrRitu | Category: Nature | Post Date: 2009-12-22
Copenhagen summit on climate change is one of the most talked after event discussed in the world. Climate change is one issue which concerns the whole world equally and also has the same devastating effect on all. I am not sure about the outcome of Copenhagen summit on climate change, but I will consider this summit to be a big success already. I know there are many who will not agree with my point of view, because they expected a lot from this summit. But I claim Copenhagen summit is a success because of the kindly of awareness and curiosity it has raised among the common masses. All of us are now talking about climate change; all of us know that there is something called green house gasses which are making our world warmer. Warm climate is making our glaciers to melt resulting in increase in sea level by almost 200 feet by 2050. This will be a disaster. No one can survive this tragedy. In countries like India, Himalayas are like water towers for this sub-continent. If all glaciers will melt, the whole population will die in flash floods and if any survives will have no water to drink. All will be in sea and non drinkable. The Copenhagen summit was organized not only to discuss the above problems but also to take those first few steps towards preventing global warming. The summit was organized to set a milestones and target for each and every countries and not only most polluting countries like America, Brazil, South Africa, India and China. America lies far ahead in contributing to the mess. But thankfully Mr. Obama has taken the leadership and has agreed to make this summit a success. Due to burning of fossil fuels, huge amount of green house gases are left to atmosphere. These gases act as a blanket preventing the earth to effectively radiate the heat to the space. With the increase of fossil fuel burning, the greenhouse gasses are accumulating more and more in the outer atmospheres. Due to this average temperature of the earth is has increase by more than two degree centigrade in the last ten years. This is the most alarming situation. At this rate of increase of temperature, there is a huge risk of all polar caps melting and flooding our rivers and seas. The solution like carbon taxes, electric and hybrid cars are only a drop in the ocean. The requirement is so intents and urgent that we all have to do something enormous in next few years otherwise there will be nothing to save. Immediate step that can be taken is to stop consumption of all fossil fuels. I know this is an extreme step, but ultimately we have to reach an understanding to have this implemented. Use of solar energy for meeting our energy-demands is the perfect solution. Scientists have a big role to play in innovation of a technology which can convert the greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide) to some useable or non dangerous substrate. At present only the natural process of photosynthesis is known to convert CO2 to a useful product. But at present we have not been successful to imitate this natural process of CO2 consumption. If we can do this, the concentration of greenhouse gases will deplete and global warming can be controlled very fast.
