The biological definition for six pack abs is ‘rectus abdominal muscle'. This is one muscle in human body which is a paired muscle. Rectus abdominal muscle runs vertically, there are two parallel muscles in pairs which can be developed by doing workouts of abs. A developed rectus abdominal muscle is seen vertically in three pairs. Hence the name six pack abs.

In developing a six pack abs there are two very important steps. The first step is reduction of layer of fat which hides and covers the abdominal muscle (abs muscle). Generally when we touch a stomach we feel only a loose layer of fat accumulated in the abdomen. The second step is the strengthening of the abdomen muscles.

There is a big misnomer that exercising of your belly will develop your six pack abs. But unless you reduce the accumulated fat layer, six pack abs will not come on the surface. Till all fat is all burned down, there will be no six pack muscle visible to naked eye. By doing only abs training one is actually jumping to step two of abs strengthening. Until you burn fat, abs strengthening will not help in gaining six pack abs.

Focusing on abs is strengthening is false requirement publicized by fitness industry. Fitness industry spends millions to develop expensive equipments. To sell these equipments they tell the customers to buy their equipments and get instant results. Their logic says that as their equipments is developed targeting a specific area of body hence the results are quick and confirmed.
To burn the excess fat deposits of your stomach one has to create a negative energy balance so that not only the fat deposition is stopped but also the earlier deposited fat is also burned and removed. One has to exercise and diet to create a negative energy balance. One can also increase their metabolism rate to increase the capacity of their body digest the fat intake in the form of food.

You can do the following exercise to create a negative emergency balance and to increase the metabolism rate:

One can perform ten sets of work outs as described here. Each set shall consist of two minutes of slow running followed by fifteen seconds of fast running. This type of exercise not only burn huge amount of calories but also speeds up the metabolism rate till the time for which you are exercising.
Cardiovascular exercise is considered best for burning excess fat. Taking a fast walk out in the open not only gives you a breath of fresh air but also revs up your metabolism. Swimming, treadmill, aerobics etc are few most popular forms of cardiovascular exercises.

Strength training is the best way of increasing the metabolism rate of your body. By increasing the weight of muscle of your body, the body does extra work (even when you are sleeping) of burning your deposited fat. Hence you can say that if you are working out in gym for developing your biceps, thighs and calf, it will indirectly lead to burning of deposit fat in your abdomen area.
