The celebration of Valentine's Day on February 14 every year is one occasion that has been viewed as a festive one. Some people look forward to celebrating it and others treat it as just any other ordinary day. It is nonetheless a celebration that represents an occasion that has occurred on the same ‘date' some time ago, counting the days, months and even years.

Maybe not a lot of people view Valentine's Day as an original religious event as a tribute to the sacrifices of a rebel Catholic priest named Saint Valentine. He defended lovers or couples who were in love and encouraged them to get married even against the laws of the Emperor Claudius in Rome of 270 AD.

Many views have come up regarding Valentine's Day. It associates itself with the onset of spring which starts around the middle of February in various countries of the world. This is also a season associated with the time when birds in that part of Europe where this celebration originated look for their mates; thus a reference to mating and fertility. This view about this day also extends to some fertility celebrations of the early European time. The Ancient Athenians or Greek people viewed February as the month to celebrate the marriage of the Greek gods -Zeus and Hera. The Ancient Roman people also celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia to pay tribute and respect to the Roman gods of Fertility-Lupercus and Faunus.

On the present times, Valentine's Day has become so commercialized. The view about this celebration is about love and devotion to each other as a couple. There is the commitment to the vows of staying together in life. This has also paved the way for more commercialized notions to celebrate the occasion with flowers and chocolates, gifts, expensive dinners or parties and other similar celebrations. Love and romance has taken a variety of commercialized forms which a lot of people have become accustomed to.

Other views about celebrating Valentine's Day is that some people look at it as an exciting, playful and yet unrealistic kind of celebration. They may be against this kind of celebration, but then there are still more people who are into the belief that this day is still a special day to celebrate annually. More people still connects this day to romance and love, and being just so commercialized, it has become more popular with that kind of view.

Though there are different ways to celebrate Valentine's Day like having quiet dinners or a simple private affair, others go out to openly celebrate with such spectacles of fun and frolic. Those in the younger age group view Valentine's Day as a happy and a fun celebration to show their love and deep feelings for their loved ones. Others who are influenced by cultural and family traditions may celebrate this day with more respect and solemnity, in remembrance of its religious beginnings.

Even so, Valentine's Day is still worth remembering because it takes into the special memory about matters of the heart- love and celebration of that feeling of being in love. It is just a matter of personal choice on how you want to celebrate it since you are with that very special loved one in your life.
