If brain is the processing unit then spinal cord are the cables joining the CPU with the organs. Our sensory organ continuously sends the information back and forth to our brain. What we see, smell, touch etc are all input information for brain. Our brain takes the inputs and makes it into an understandable, useable fact. The spinal cord is a vital link between brain and organs. In case of any damage on spinal cord the result is disastrous even leading to paralysis. When an organ of a person is paralyzed, it results is decrease of mobility and even may lead to loss of sensation. Total and partial paralysis is dependent on the extent of the injury to the spinal cord. If spinal cord is only partially damaged, it means only few organs are paralyzed which are linked to that part of the spinal cord. It's common to find patients whose few organs are paralyzed and the balance is nearly normal. This can happen when some part of spinal cord is functioning properly. It means the message from the brain is transferred to the working organs by spine. The most severe form of spinal injury happens when a person is hurt in the spinal cord above the neck area. This area of spinal cord at the top end is called cervical spine. Cervical spine injury may cause damage to the mechanism of breathing. People having severe cervical spinal injury become dependent on artificial respiratory systems. The part of the spine below the neck to the chest area is called thoracic spine. The spine in the thoracic region is mainly connected with the abdomen and legs. Injury to thoracic spine leads to dysfunction of abdomen and legs. The lower most spinal cord is less effective than the cervical spine and thoracic spine. Hence injury to the lower spine is less destructive than the cervical and thoracic spine. The spinal cord extending from the chest region to pelvic region is called lumbar/sacral spine. Any injury to lumbar or sacral spine generally does not lead to paralysis. A person whose lower spine is injured may feel some loss of control on his legs but in general any loss of sensation or mobility is not observed. The lower spines are designed to absorb sudden jerks and shocks on the spine. This is common during biking, horse riding, and some other sports activity. Even if the lower spine is injured we can be confident that after regular medication and training it is possible to recover normal life. In case of patients suffering from paralysis due to spinal cord injury there is a few less chance of recovery. Let it be partial or complete spinal cord injury, but the extent of compromise an individual has to make to lead his daily life is immense. There is partial to total dependency of family members when a person is suffering from paralysis. The pain of getting dependent is far more severe than the pain caused by physical injury to the spine. It is always advised that one must realize the importance of cervical and thoracic spine and do all care to protect them.
