Research has shown that students learn concepts and skills more readily when they receive one-on-one instruction. This is not feasible in the traditional classroom-based instruction where the Teacher to Student ratio is 1:30. On the other hand, Intelligent Tutoring Systems provide personalized learning environments which analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each student in order to customize instruction to their specific needs.

They also offer learners prompt feedback through suitable hints, examples and exercises. Intelligent Tutoring Systems offer feedback in real-time, ensuring that misunderstandings are immediately addressed so that students would construct their knowledge promptly and effectively. ITSs provide prompt feedback on errors and misconceptions. In this way, the student does not have to wait until the homework is graded and returned by the Teacher.

One major challenge which teachers encounter is the fact that they usually have excessive workload. Teachers do not always have sufficient time to check all problems and to quickly return homework to the students. Among the negative outcomes of this situation is a decrease in the motivation of the teachers.

However, intelligent tutoring systems reduce the time spent by teachers in grading and proctoring. The prompt feedback provided by the ITS enables the Teacher to move on to the next subject, thus completing the curriculum on time. Another significant benefit of Intelligent Tutoring Systems is that they reduce the time instructors devote to professional development, lesson preparation and face-o-face meeting with students.

Consequently, ITSs have been employed in the teaching of core courses such as Mathematics, Physics and core Language courses in many primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the United States, various countries in Europe and a few developing countries. They have actually gained acceptance and popularity in education due to increased student performance, deepened cognitive development, reduced time for students to acquire skills and knowledge, reduced time spent by Teachers in grading, lesson preparation and professional development.
