Eating Disorder Problem: It Can Happen to Your ChildBY: Eve | Category: Health | Post Date: 2010-01-16
The development of your child may be dependent on the kinds of food he eats. As a mother, you make sure that your child gets to eat the proper foods with the correct balance of nutrients and vitamins to ensure the healthy growth of your child. In the event that the child refuses to take food or takes very little food, then you must be able to detect that there is a problem. If the child is not sick at all, and there is still continued loss of appetite, then the child must be taken to the doctor for further evaluation of the problem. In this case, your child may be assessed as having an eating disorder problem. The eating disorder problem includes three types and it is good that you must know these. Bulimia is a kind of eating disorder that has the child do intended vomiting; self-vomiting is forcibly done to let the foods out. Anorexia is the phobia of taking in food or the child is dreadful of the food about to be eaten. Binge-eating or Compulsive Overeating is described as a condition wherein the child continues to eat even without feeling hungry or eats uncontrollably even when already full. All these depict a wrong way of eating and this is also considered a major health problem for your child. You must also be on the lookout for the following symptoms in your child: The child eats very little or almost no food at all. There is abrupt drop in weight. Your child refuses to join during family meals or eats secretly in another room. You may notice an unbalanced proportion of the body image. The child immediately leaves after eating and proceeds to the bathroom. The child may show some signs of dizziness, irritability and restlessness. The child feels cold most of the time. The child may complain of stomach cramps. The child wears loose clothes to hide body shape. The child's skin is dry, yellowish, has dry unkempt hair and at times the child has a bloated face. The fingers may have cuts, bites and sores. The child tries to exercise most of the time. The child may talk about the fear of getting fat. The eating disorder problem may come from other resulting problems that may be biological, emotional and behavioral in nature. There may also be some psychological and social issues. Some children like to believe that being thin is normal so that they can easily wear any clothes just like what the fashion models wear. So to be able to look like the models they see, the child eats lesser than the required amount of foods, and adapts this attitude to be in the weight that the child believes is the right weight. If your child shows these symptoms, you must immediately give it your attention. Try to communicate with your child and try to show your concern. Try to be more patient, be more sensible and be realistic that your child has a problem. Don't press your child to eat and don't show any anger or resentment either. Try to make compromises so your child can eat even little by little. Then seek the doctor's professional advice about your child. You may also look for a good family counselor to help you with your problem. There are good programs for families who are dealing with child eating disorders. Each program may include some form of treatment which may include family therapy, nutritional counseling, medical management and psychological therapy. All these are part of the family support programs to help the child deal with the eating disorder problem.
