Education is More Than What Happens in the ClassroomBY: Guest | Category: Education | Post Date: 2010-01-24
When you think about education, what comes to mind? Usually, professors, classrooms, and (gulp!) homework. If you are paying for your own education, you will likely expect to receive appropriate academic instruction, intellectual challenge, and skills training for the money you are spending. What is often overlooked in education, though, is the value of extracurricular activities in the educational process. According to a study by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Indicators of successful participation in school include consistent attendance, academic achievement, and aspirations for continuing education beyond high school. Extracurricular participation was positively associated with each of these success indicators among public high school seniors in 19924. In this study, the NCES considered extracurricular activities to include sports, performing arts, publications, honor societies, student government, and clubs (academic, non-academic, service and hobby). USA Today found a similar trend in the 60 students of the All-USA High School Academic First, Second and Third Teams and the 51 recipients of an honorable mention. 75 percent of students in these groups were involved in sports, speech, music or debate5. Aside from the academic advantage that extracurricular activities provide, clubs and organizations, part-time jobs, and a social life each enhance students' education through real-life experiences. Clubs and organizations give students an opportunity to relate to one another on a different level. Instead of hanging out as friends or working together as classmates under the direction of an instructor, students become co-laborers in the achievement of certain goals that they decide upon. They develop a sense of ownership not because of a grade that will be assigned to them, but because they enjoy the activity and want to see it developed in their own life or the lives of others. This is one avenue in which students can discover and develop a sense of entrepreneurship, charity, or creativity. Another way to reinforce the value of education is by getting a part-time job. Whether this is in retail, food services, the student's desired profession, or another area, it is a critical opportunity to develop work ethic and bridge a student's academic accomplishments with application in the workplace. The process of applying for a position also gives the student a low-risk environment in which to learn what contributes to their failure and success at job seeking. Once attained, these skills are easily transferable to the higher-risk applications that will be completed post-graduation. An often overlooked aspect of education is the social life that comes with on-campus life. By engaging in work, school, and a social life, students learn to set priorities and make sometimes unpopular choices based on those priorities. An active social life also gives students a chance to clarify what they value in friendships and dating relationships. Poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that -We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for ten or fifteen years, and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing.- Though this may be hyperbole, Emerson seems to agree that the process of education involves more than the classroom setting.
