Check email. Browse job alerts. Apply for a couple jobs. Read and file rejection email. Rewrite resume to fit a job that sounds interesting. Apply. Check social networking sites for contacts that might be able to help. Maybe I should have stayed in school. . .

With 9.7% of the population in the United States unemployed as of the end of 2009, job searching can be a daunting task. Even those positions that seem perfectly suited to one's resume and experience are often flooded with more-qualified applicants. For a lot of job seekers, it's hard not to wish that they could go back in time and rewrite their own resume.

Educational opportunities during this recession can help you do just that. When money is tight and job opportunities are scarce, taking job training courses or pursing a higher degree can help give you the edge you need when applying for jobs.

Not only will education help you get that job, having a greater level of education generally also will give you a greater salary. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, as of the fourth quarter of 2009,

. . .full-time workers age 25 and over without a high school diploma had median weekly earnings of $449, compared with $638 for high school graduates (no college) and $1,121 for those holding at least a bachelor's degree. Among college graduates with advanced degrees (professional or master's degree and above), the highest earning 10 percent of male workers made $3,342 or more per week, compared with $2,156 or more for their female counterparts.

When deciding what path to take for your education, there are many options. Trade schools, universities, online colleges, community colleges, and even programs with your city's parks and recreation department each have their benefits and challenges. Before you decide, think about your own learning style, financial boundaries, and existing education and experience. If you already have the skills for a certain trade, a certification would boost your resume without challenging your intellect or pocketbook too much. If you are applying for a professional position, it might be worth applying for a longer-term program with a college and noting your expected date of graduation on your resume.

Given that we're in the midst of a recession, you might wonder where you will get the finances to go back to school. Here are a few options:

* Deferred payments - Many student loans have deferred payments until after graduation, so if you are thoughtful in choosing a educational path that will increase your chances of employment, you will be more likely to have a job that will be able to pay for those loans upon graduation.
* Grants and scholarships - Grants and scholarships are available to those who are willing to look for them. I just went to www.fastweb.com, and after filling in a few forms, I was matched with thirty-five scholarships and grants valued at up to $7500 each.
* Tuition reimbursement - Many employers also have tuition reimbursement programs. Make sure to ask potential employers about this when you are offered a position.
* FAFSA - The federal government offers financial aid through FAFSA.

Whether you are looking to increase your own marketability for jobs or want to do something productive with the free time you suddenly find yourself with now that you are unemployed, pursuing education may be the next step for you.
