Maybe it would help if we define ego first. The Thesaurus dictionary defines it as self image, self esteem, self worth and personality. Personally, I define ego as a perception of how you feel in the inside - of yourself. It can be subjective, biased or non-commital to anything. Your ego is bordering on reason and common sense. It can be influenced by impulses in you that may be unconsciously demanding satisfaction to please you. It can start from infancy to what you have become now- as you, an individual, an adult.

Did you know that we were born without ego? Yes, because as a new born baby you haven't developed it yet. You were pure and harmless to the world you were born to and needed your mother for support.

Then you started to grow up, and so did the ego. You start to develop more perception of the reality around you. Eventually, as you continue to grow up and get used to the world around you your ego undergoes stages of development, too. As a young kid, you tend to be rash or reckless in your actions and attitudes. You could only be controlled when you are reprimanded, promised rewards or sometimes punished. Your ego was often a basis for 'I' , since as a very young kid that was your understanding of how life was for you. As you become a teenager, you are now more conscious of the reality around you. You have the chance to discuss things with other people, argue and you start taking charge of your independence. As you turn into a young adult, you may have gained more confidence in taking care of your own problems, handle finances, make decisions about your life to make it successful as you plan it to be. As an older adult, you have become more matured in your decisions and attitudes. You accept and welcome everything that would come into your life.

The ego grows as you grow. Each stage of development can differ from the other; you develop traits and habits that are better than the previous stage. You develop physically and psychologically. The psychological factor can influence your ego. If you are sensitive, your ego gets upset and you feel hurt. If you are firm and obstinate, your ego is proud.

Feelings get hurt if your ego gets hurt. Your ego gets to work if you allow it to do that- feeling what you should be feeling at any situation. You just have to work on your ego, control it and use it when you have to.
