For many of us, gone are the days of a housewife prepared to greet her husband at the end of his long day with dinner ready, children washed, and the home at peace. Instead, many families have had to face the reality that today's economy makes it difficult, if not impossible, to live on one income. For parents who would rather raise their own children than pay close to half of a paycheck to have someone else take care of their kids, a stay-at-home job may be the solution.

There are many different kinds of jobs available that let you work from home. In fact, some of the major job searching web sites are beginning to add special search boxes to enable job seekers to browse only those jobs that allow working from home (Craig's List includes a check-box for telecommuting). Because of the advantages to the business, many companies are beginning to get creative in finding ways to enable staff to work from home. Companies save money by not having to provide office space and supplies, taking out commute time (and therefore taking out the possibility of traffic or other delays keeping a person from work), and tapping into another sector of the job seeker market. Some of the most popular work-at-home jobs fall in the realms of sales, data entry, and computer design or programming.

There is a risk with getting a stay-at-home job. While there are many reputable companies using this option of employment, there are also many others who are looking for ways to take advantage of people who are in need (in this case, the unemployed). In order to ensure that the company that you are applying for is reputable, make sure you do your homework. When you first see a job posting that looks interesting to you, search for the company on the internet. Their company web site should come up, and there may even be reviews written about the company and their services. However, each of these can be very easily fabricated. To make sure that the company is legal, check their contact information and consider contacting their city to see if they have a valid business license on file. Next, look for reviews from companies and individuals who have used their services before. Even if you find individual postings about the company, don't trust them. Many scammers pay freelance writers to post comments on blogs and forums about their services. While this is a tactic used by legitimate companies as well, you may be able to determine whether the comments are real or fake by contacting the original poster, or by taking a general pulse of all of the comments that you can find from multiple web sites.

Once you find a reputable company and a job that you like, take a look at your family life to make sure that they will work well together. Just because a job can be done from home doesn't mean that it will enable you to spend time with your kids. By setting reasonable working times and keeping your overall goal in mind, you should be able to balance your job and family. Try to work when your kids are engaged in other structured activities like a play group or class; naps are also a great time to get in an hour or two of work. There are also quite a few hours at the end of the day, after the kids have gone to bed, during which you can have some undivided time to commit to working. Just beware of the other relationship at home that you will want to keep up - your marriage. After all, if your family and marriage suffer as you are trying to work from home, you may not be improving on a traditional working situation.
