Let's face it, college is expensive. Once you figure in the cost of tuition, parking, books, transportation, and room & board, it might be hard to imagine finding a way to pay for it all (especially when a bad economy or esoteric degree doesn't make getting a job directly after graduation likely). One way to help reduce the financial burden of college is by seeking scholarships to help offset the costs.

As you begin thinking about finding and winning the best scholarships, start by brainstorming some of your strengths, characteristics, and interests. You might pull out a pad of paper and just start jotting down whatever comes to mind in these three categories. First, write down what you excel at; hobbies, academics, or sports could go in this section. Even if it is as simple as something like paper football, write it down. The second category is for your characteristics. These are things that are inherent to who you are: your ethnicity, nationality, religion, primary language, and family situation. The third sheet of paper should include your interests: art, architecture, the environment, a career path, or even something as detailed as the mating habits of the Canadian Leaf Beetle. This is a brainstorming stage; don't edit your thoughts, just keep writing.

The second stage of finding the right scholarships is browsing through the available scholarships. While there are books published annually that list places to find scholarships, there are many resources online that won't require you to make that initial investment (and let's face it, we're trying to come up with money here, right?). College.gov has links to a couple different government-managed web sites that can help you in your search for scholarships. The web sites have keyword search fields in which you can type any of the words that you just brainstormed. A list of scholarships will come up that you might qualify for. You can either create a spreadsheet of the scholarships that you want to apply for, or just go through the list one-by-one and apply as they come up.

Many scholarships will require you to submit an essay that explains your financial need, why you qualify, and what your long-term plans are. While it may be easy to write one essay and submit it for multiple scholarships, you will have a better chance of receiving a scholarship if you write a new essay for each scholarship that you apply for. To get a better sense for the organization, make sure to look at their web site before you begin writing. It's extremely important not to falsify any information in your scholarship application; aside from being immoral (which is reason enough not to do it), it can also disqualify you from receiving the scholarship.

Treat your search for scholarships just like you treated your applications for schools. By doing your homework, putting forth your best essays and qualifications, and being persistent, you will increase your chances of finding and winning the best scholarships.
