Kefir refers to the fermented milk product of milk combined with yeast and bacteria that involved the process of fermentation. It is nourishing, nutritious and has other healthful benefits for the body. It is made up of healthy microorganisms that help the body systems perform properly. Kefir is easily absorbed by the body. It is full of probiotics which help in good digestion. It can decrease diarrhea symptoms and helps reduce gas pain symptoms. It also aids in lactose digestion because it contains good bacteria that can break down lactose. It successfully helps people with little lactose tolerance maintain good digestion when they drink milk.

Kefir is also beneficial to the immune system. It aids in reducing infections and can wipe out viruses and germs that try to invade the body. It is loaded with vitamins like Vitamin B and K. It has minerals like calcium and magnesium. These nutrients provide nourishment to the internal organs of the body.

There are positive results for Kefir as potential cure for certain cancers like breast cancer. Research studies show that cancer cells were reduced due to kefir extracts. Medical practitioners have suggested that Kefir can be a good substitute to milk, yogurt, granola and cereal.

The nervous system is likewise getting benefits from Kefir. Drinking Kefir helps lower sleeping disorders and nervous tensions as well as ADHD. It is a good source of nourishment for the elderly, pregnant and nursing mothers. The younger children would also profit from Kefir because it can be made into a delicious and healthy smoothie which they love to eat.

The good thing about kefir is that you can make it at home. You just have to remember that time and temperatures are two important aspects to make it depending on your taste. The Kefir made in its correct time and temperature is simply drinkable; its texture is creamy and a bit thicker in contrast to milk. You can shake it well then it can be placed in the refrigerator. If you allow it too long at normal temperature the Kefir would become thick and a bit cheesy. If your kefir stays even longer then it becomes too sour and appears swelled up for your taste. You have to make the proper adjustments of time and temperature to satisfy your own taste.

Kefir can be fermented from milk of most mammals. Other milk sources that can be used to make kefir are from cows, sheep and goat. It can also ferment milk substitutes like soy milk, coconut milk, rice milk. There are also sugary liquids considered to ferment kefir like fruit juice, coconut water, and ginger beer as long as the conditions for abundant bacteria growths are met.

You can drink your kefir as it is but if you find it too sour for your taste or you're not used to its taste yet, you can add some fruits like frozen strawberry, banana, blueberries and other fruits, then place everything in a blender to make a nutritious smoothie. You can also add some natural sweeteners to your kefir like honey, maple syrup, vanilla, nectar and other sweet flavors.

Kefir is widely sold in Russia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine and other nearby countries. It is relatively a popular drink to take for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Kefir is also used as an ingredient in cold beet soup, a popular dish in Russia and Poland.

Kefir is progressively being researched and studied to find out more of its healthful benefits. It is now accepted as a good substitute for milk and yogurt for both the young and old. It is an economical way to be fit and healthy. It can be taken in as part of a healthy diet.
