Admittedly, I am not fond of eating vegetables. As a little girl, my mom had a hard time preparing meals with vegetables because my siblings and I didn't really eat veggies. The only vegetables we ate were cabbage, carrots, spinach, squash and string beans. Then we had beef, pork and chicken most of the time with plenty of desserts in between. We also had fish and sea foods but not quite often. Then we also had milk, cheese and oatmeal. We drank sodas, fruit juices and plenty of soft drinks. We ate junk food like fries, hamburgers, candies, fish balls, squid balls and many more. That kind of diet made us grow taller, healthy and smart. Maybe we were just lucky that even if we had that kind of diet it didn't hamper our growth- we were healthy, we grew taller and we were competitive in school and were free from diseases.

However, now that everybody's into healthy living, maybe I can add some healthy foods that I know would give healthful benefits. Some foods I ate before may not be good so it's just best that we eliminate these from our daily diet.

First, it was a good thing we ate oatmeal. I was addicted to oatmeal; I could take it hot or cold. I ate it for breakfast, as snacks for my morning and afternoon breaks in school and had it again before bedtime. So, that made me healthy because now oatmeal is considered a healthy food- good for the heart and is rich in fiber.

Then fish- we had freshwater fish from the market or sometimes from the grocery. We had fish from cans like canned tuna, salmon, sardines, herrings and mackerel. Well, the fresh fish are the best source of healthy omega3 fats which the body needs to function well. Fresh fish like tuna and salmon are now considered as good healthy sources of fats. Better still if they are grilled, baked and if fried, virgin coconut oil is used so it would still be healthy.

Milk is okay but if you have to watch your weight, maybe it would have to be non-fat or skimmed milk; or you can also choose soya milk.

For the fruit juices, well, they have to be made fresh instead of the canned ones since they have sugar and other preservatives. Maybe it would be better if you just eat fresh fruits like papaya, apples, kiwi, watermelon, oranges, strawberries, grapes and a lot more since these are all packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

Avoid too many sweets and oily foods. Avoid too much sugar and salt. Avoid soft drinks and sodas. Avoid junk foods altogether. All these contain calories that add up to your weight. These are bad especially if you take in excess; they can cause diabetes, heart problems, high cholesterol levels, rheumatism and you might find yourself to be obese if you don't control foods like these.

Add more vegetables in your diet like broccoli, pepper, beans, potatoes, cucumbers and many more green leafy vegetables. Add nuts, peanuts, walnuts and flaxseeds. These foods are good for the brain. Don't forget to drink plenty of water, at least 8 glasses a day or more to wash away toxins from your body.

I'm now trying to eat healthy to maintain my weight. Reading about healthy foods is an advantage and knowing the bad effects of unhealthy foods and unhealthy eating habits also keeps me better informed. I'd like to stay healthy for a long time and enjoy my life free from illness and other health problems as well.
