If you have a child who is of school age, it just appropriate for you to know everything that goes within the school. It is an important concern for you since your child spends almost spends half of the day with people outside your immediate family. You get to know the school premises; school activities, your child's classmates and their parents, and most importantly you try to get to know the teacher who handles the class where your child belongs. This a good time as any to start fostering a good affiliation with your child's teacher. You and the teacher share a mutual concern- that is to give the best kind of education and proper development of skills and well-being of your child. You can do this by making sure you are updated with the school activities by attending them, attending PTA's and other school activities that need your presence. The fostering starts by taking your child to school on the first week of school opening. You can meet the teacher on the first few days in a relaxed and informal way of introducing yourself as the parent. Make sure to shake hands and bring out the best friendly smile to the teacher. Try to be comfortable so the teacher would feel the same way about your friendly encounters in the days to come. Then you can try to follow through with the teacher about the performance of your child at school. You can do this thru phone or by sending a friendly letter to ask about your child. You may even set a scheduled time to meet with the teacher if both of you feel there are some important things to be discussed regarding your child. You must attend PTA'S because these are important meetings where all teachers, school authorities and parents meet to discuss school problems or anything about the children's school standings. You would also be well informed of changes that would happen in the school. This is also the chance wherein you can discuss your interests and concerns about some issues which you think need to be taken up. There is also the ‘Open House' affair wherein all parents are requested to come to really observe the child during actual school class carrying out their school sessions. This is also a good time to ask the teacher to bring you up to date about your child's accomplishments in school. To make your fostering affiliation with the teacher better, you must show respect to the teacher and the same respect should be shown towards you. As a parent you must respect the right of the teacher in enforcing some school rules that your child has to follow, and you must also respect the teacher's way of handling her own teaching methods. If this does not fit in with your liking, you can calmly discuss this with the teacher or have a scheduled meeting with a higher school authority to thresh out things properly. Always remember to avoid criticism and offensive remarks when discussing some problems with the teacher. Make it a point to be calm, patient and be understanding about the teacher's situation, and in return, try to let the teacher know you are open to suggestions and recommendations to settle any problems concerning you and your child. Make her feel your appreciation of her by thanking her when you attend school activities, making a phone call or sending a thank you card. The teacher would greatly be flattered that you took time to appreciate her work. The key to fostering a good parent-teacher affiliation is having constant and open communication and having the time to share ideas and solutions which would result to the better interests of your child.
