Funding your College Education Without Going BrokeBY: Guest | Category: Education | Post Date: 2010-01-31
A college education is a long-term investment. While this may sound like something from a pamphlet from the latest college that you applied to, it is a double-edged sword. While a college education should help you financially in the long run (at least if you choose wisely and study hard), the financial benefits from school may not be seen for quite a while. In the meantime, there are books, units, housing, food, and transportation costs to take into consideration. Not to mention the possibility of having a social life while you're in school. In order to combat some of the immediate expenses of college, as well as to manage the long-term debts that you are likely to accrue, you may need to consider multiple streams of funding for you education, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work study. Scholarships A scholarship is a certain sum that an individual or organization has set aside to give to a student who fulfills given criteria. The kind of scholarships you can get vary from those based on something that you have complete control of such as your grade point average and hobbies, to things that you had to be born with, such as your ethnicity. Though there are no guarantees that you will get a scholarship, by applying for scholarships in your field or interest areas, you might find even a few dollars thrown your way to help offset the expense of your college education. Grants Grants are also certain sums of money given to students, but they are based on need. Grants are available from private parties, organizations, and the government. The qualifications for grants vary, but some grants require that you complete a certain amount of classes or that you work in a certain field once you receive the grant. Though in general you do not have to repay grants, you do need to make sure that you read the fine print on the grant before you accept it so that you know what requirements you are agreeing to. If you fail to complete any requirements (such as using your degree at an approved employer who services a low-income community), the terms of the grant will be nullified and you will be legally responsible for paying back the grant. Loans Loans are one way to borrow money from the bank or the government for a short time, with the goal of paying them back later. Federal student loans usually don't have to be paid back until after graduation, and have low interest rates. If you choose to get a loan from a bank, the terms of the loan will vary depending on your credit and the bank itself. Work Study Work study is a program that you can join provided by the federal government that will help you get a job in the community that relates to your course of study. By working at this job, you will not only gain valuable experience toward your long-term educational and professional goals, but the money you make will go toward your college expenses.
