Heavy dieting without exercising will make you gain more weight in long run

World population is obsessed with the imagination of having that well toned body. The culprit of creating this obsession is the weight loss industry. The weight loss industry thrives on the magic formulae they propose to affect dramatic weight reduction. The magic formula is either linked to an expensive ‘work-out machine' or ‘low calorie meal plans'. The low calorie diet plans are proposed by one and all. Everybody claims to be a nutritionist specialist, the Einstein of all diets. They sell a concept which we already know. We pay for something that (may be) we know better than them. But they market their plan in such a way that we get fooled in believing that they know more than us.

By consuming their proposed low calorie diet we actually do loose weight, but in long run they cause more harm than good. One parameter we compromise heavily is the nutrition and secondly we do not realize that such low calorie diet is a short time solution. Loosing weight by consuming low calorie food is like a short cut to weight loss. By travelling this route you may actually loose weight but as soon as you stop the consuming those low calorie foods you gain back the lost weight. Generally it is seen that after dieting people do gain more weight than what they carried before dieting. A girl getting married follows this low calorie diet plan, looses weight, marries and gains back the lost weight by the time they celebrate their first anniversary.
The ideal method to affect weight loss and weight management is balanced diet (not dieting) coupled with regular exercise.

By dieting you are actually starving your body to create a negative energy balance, hence you loose weight. By starving, people also loose muscles. Due to muscle loss, the metabolism rate of the body also falls down. Metabolism rate is a mechanism of your body that consumes calories even while you are sleeping or watching TV. Suppose your metabolism rate is (rate at which you consume calories) is 2000 calories per day. If you decide to diet and loose weight, suppose you have reduced your calories intake from 2000 calories per day to 1200 calorie per day. Let's assume that the dieting has resulted in the weight loss of about 5Kg in two weeks. Of course you will be very happy in loosing this weight, but there is a big fallacy in loosing the weight by only dieting.

When we diet we create a negative energy balance, means our body is not getting enough calories to maintain our present weight. Hence the body searches for calories from other sources other than food. The easiest source to get the calories is from the muscles. Thus the muscles get depleted during dieting. The objective of loosing weight shall be achieved by loosing deposited fat and not by loosing muscles. Instead of loosing muscles you shall gain muscles and increase your metabolism.

Strict dieting cannot be maintained for a long time. After few days or weeks everybody goes back to the normal diet plan. But by the time you decide to go back to your old diet plan, it's already too late. You have lost enough muscles to reduce the metabolism rate than what it was at your normal body weight. By going back to old diet plan, you tend to accumulate more fat and extra calories than normal. Hence you gain more weight than you lost.
