Helpful Tips to Protect Your EyesBY: Eve | Category: Health | Post Date: 2009-12-16
The proper caring of your eyes should be an important habit for you to do. You should be always on the alert to resolve eye problems and eyesight difficulties right away. You need to shelter your eyes from the damaging effects of the environment. The eyes need to have protection from excessive heat, dust, wind, sunlight and other environmental factors. It would be an advantage for you to have a regular eye checkup; maybe at least once a year would be okay. This would be good to avoid eye problems and have immediate solutions for them. If you are already wearing eyeglasses then you can have your eyes and glasses checked for any impending problem. If you are wearing contact lens then this is a good time for these to be checked as well. As always, make it a good habit to have a healthy and well-balanced diet. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits that are full of vitamins especially Vitamins A, C and E. Eat more carrots, more broccoli and fish. Get rid of your bad habits if you have any like smoking and drinking alcohol. Too much of both are detrimental to your health especially to your eyes. Smoking and drinking affect your eyes making them appear dull, weary, fatigued and worn out. Smoking also affects blood circulation in your blood stream and lessens the flow to your eye area. If you have a medical condition like diabetes it would always be healthy to have your regular eye check ups. If you feel your eyesight deteriorating, go to your doctor at once to have your eyes checked. Any neglect would lead to more possible severe eye problems for you. If you also have high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure, have your eyes checked by your doctor regularly because these medical conditions greatly affect the condition of your eyes. If you are out, make it a habit to wear sunglasses with at least 95-99% UV protection. There are now available sunglasses which provide this kind of protection for your eyes; sure, they may cost a little more than your ordinary sunglasses, but think of the costs you save compared to totally damaging your eyes. Choose sunglasses that have the wrap around types of frames to fully cover your eyes from too much sunlight and wind. You can also wear scarves, wide hats and umbrellas to protect your eyes. Make sure to wear protective glasses when you are engaged in active and tough sports. If you are working around heavy equipment and machines then you must wear protective glasses as well. If you have the habit of rubbing your eyes with your hands, then stop. Rubbing makes your eyes hurt and too hard rubbings may cause your retina to suffer a tear. Just use a soft cotton hankie or cloth to gently wipe your eyes. Always keep your hands clean before touching your eyes. Having unclean hands would cause possible infection to the eyes. If you have eye irritation, if you can possibly handle it yourself, get some eye drops to cool your eyes; if this doesn't work, go to your doctor immediate to prevent further irritation of your eyes. When watching TV, have a good distance of about 5-6 meters away. If you can't keep yourself that far away from your TV, then use anti-glare screens to protect your eyes from too much glare. Make sure to have the right and appropriate lighting whenever you read. If you are working in front of the computer, have proper lighting and make use of anti-glare screen, too. If you feel your eyes are tired, try to look away for a short while from your computer screen, close your eyes for about two minutes and relax. You can also do some simple eye exercises to prevent eye tension and stress. Try to blink more often since this keeps your eyes lubricated. Rest your eyes for a few minutes every time you feel them to be tired. Look at something that relaxes your eyes like something colored green and blue. At night after you have rested long enough, wash and dab cold water over your eyes to refresh them. Use eye drops and you can have this prescribed by your doctor if needed. Use cool cucumbers to relax your eyes or a cold towel over your face to help relieve tiredness. The key to keeping your eyes well protected is being aware of simple ways of taking care of them from the very start. If you have knowledge of these healthful methods to protect your eyes, then you are assured of good eyesight and healthy eyes for a long time.
