Hollywood Hunks and Movie Maidens: Age gaps in entertainmentBY: Guest | Category: Entertainment | Post Date: 2010-02-04
Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones in 'Entrapment,' Warren Beatty and Halle Berry in 'Bulworth,' Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow in 'A Perfect Murder,' and Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt in 'As Good As It Gets.' Aside from all of these people being good looking actors and actresses, what do they have in common? In all of these cases, there is a large difference in age between the male and female actors. Granted, this is not the most intuitive observation about these couples. It has been commented about time and time again, but for some reason there doesn't seem to be any change in way that Hollywood casts. But then again, the entertainment industry is an industry. They aren't in the habit of philanthropy for philanthropy's sake, and if a movie makes a profit, they are likely to try to duplicate their success. In other words, they are providing what we are buying. Is there are problem with the way that these relationships are being propagated? There are good arguments for both sides. Those who are accepting of the age-discrepancies between Hollywood and non-Hollywood couples alike tend to fall back on real life issues. Women usually live longer than men, so if a man married a younger woman, in theory they will share a similar lifespan for their relationship. There is a greater chance that neither person will be left a widow/widower for long. Another thing that is brought up is a woman's ability to have children. While men are able to have children later in life, women hit menopause usually around their 50s. At this point, they are unable to have children. Studies have also shown that the chances of birth defects, especially Down Syndrome, in children rise dramatically once a woman reaches the age of 35. While there have been stories about women who have had children in their fifties and sixties, this is a rare and risky occurrence. One of the reasons that these stories are publicized so much is because they are the exception to the rule. If a man doesn't get married until he is older, marrying a younger woman gives him a greater chance to have a family. For those on the other side of the issue, having a large age difference between the woman and man in a relationship can cause problems that would otherwise be avoided. In view of the entire society, having older men marry younger woman leaves a portion of the population without a spouse; namely, older women. While not every person wants to get married, it lowers the possibility for those who want to marry to find a husband. Another issue with having older-husband, younger-wife combinations is that it can create an expectation for women to be youthful throughout the length of the relationship. It also creates pressure on women of all ages to appear younger than they are. Aging is a part of life; the cells themselves don't get old (cells replace themselves on a daily basis). Instead, the body actually begins a new process to age. In some cultures such as in the Japanese culture, older people are revered. The Hebrew script ures also say that grey hair is like a crown on one's head and that wrinkles are a sign of wisdom. By creating expectations of young women marrying older men, we risk losing the benefits that come with age. No matter what your personal view on age is, it would serve our society well by representing a more balanced view of age spans in relationships.
