Home Improvement: Build a Deck Across Your Empty SpaceBY: Eve | Category: Home Improvement | Post Date: 2010-01-13
If you have a good amount of unused space in your home ground, it would be a smart move for you if you find some good ways of using the said space. Would you consider building a deck across that space? Think of your advantage if you go ahead with this plan. A deck is an extra level which you can build on your empty unused space. This is now a popular way of spreading out and making your space bigger. You may have bi-folding doors fitted in an area of your house where it can open out to the outdoors. The deck can also be a good way to cover an old terrace or court yard. You may choose your deck to be made from hardwood materials or timber. This would be more cost effective than having some concrete or solid cement structure built in your unused area. Your deck may be made of timber that is solid, durable and sturdy enough to withstand the outside climatic conditions. You can also use treated softwood for your deck. Treated softwood like pine is commonly used in decking (deck making). It is considered cost effective as well and is also one of the more well-liked materials to make a deck. Then there is also the hardwood material which is also very suitable for decking. However, this is more expensive compared to softwood. It is also more resilient, tougher and long lasting compared to softwood. This is because hardwood has some timber-like qualities of being more durable in its natural compositions. It has a longer life span just like timber. It is sturdy enough to resist insect damage. Most often, for better safety precautions, hardwood is seasoned or it goes through a process of kiln-dried. This makes its natural components more resistant to natural harsh elements like different weather conditions and exposure to insect harm. It is further taken care of by using a superior kind of decking oil which is a good quality of timber finish, and regular staining is done to maintain its clean and fresh look fro a long time. You may also make use of synthetics as materials for your decking. One of the popular lasting kinds is the compressed sheeting which is water proof, sturdy and reasonably priced. You may opt to do some enfolding on the sheeting by a finishing material that would complement it. Now, you may look on your space and start to do a sketch of the area. If you have an empty space near the kitchen, that is a suitable area for your deck. You just install some dividing doors in between the area of the house; you may close the doors connecting the kitchen to the other interior of your house. Then you may open the doors leading to the outside area from your kitchen so you can have the view of the outside. You can also choose the living room where the space can be created so you can entertain more friends. Choose wisely any space which you think would work well for you. Remember to provide the necessary safety requirements for your decking. If your deck is slightly elevated or elevated as high as you want it to be, you must have some safety railings built around it. This is required especially if you have small kids around. You may also build a child-proof gate to prevent the young children from running in and out of the area in case you are not around. Better check with the building code rules within your area to be sure you're within the bounds of its rules. Also provide some good screen covers to protect your deck from too much sunlight, wind and cold. Include in your decking plan to provide for good lighting, indoor and outdoor heating and other facilities that you may need to make your deck appropriate for your use. If your deck is elevated, make sure to provide a good clearance ground. This would provide ventilation under ground. A high level of ground clearance may be required if your area is termite-prone; so it would be wise if you check with the building code in your area. If you are dreaming of having your own spa and area in your deck, it can be possible as well. You can plan it out in your sketch plan. Remember to include the weight of the water in your layout plan and keep in mind that your deck should have to be stronger, sturdier and more durable to hold the excess weight. For your spa space, you can have your tub situated on a cement block on the ground and have your deck constructed around it. If you want to add some trees for your scenery, you just have to provide enough ground where you want your trees to grow in. With some anticipation, hopefully your home improvement plan for decking would be put into plan. At least for now, you have learned about another idea of using an empty space in you home ground.
