Homeschooling: When the Best Schooling for Your Family happens at HomeBY: Guest | Category: Education | Post Date: 2010-01-31
Susan's son has been having a hard time in school. Though he's young still, Josh has been hitting other kids, has been extremely unruly, and just can't seem to find his place in the class. Despite having Josh moved to different classrooms and even to a school with a different teaching philosophy, he still isn't thriving. Susan decides to take the next step; she's going to start homeschooling Josh. Homeschooling is a kind of elementary and secondary education that involves having children learn primary in their home or in the homes of others. In this kind of school, the parents take the primary responsibility for guiding their child's education. Josh's situation may not be uncommon, but it is far from the only reason that parents decide to take their children out of traditional school. Along with behavior issues, parents have also chosen to homeschool because of the lack of quality of education that their school district provides, the high expense of private schooling, and the opportunity that homeschooling provides for parents to infuse their own values into the schooling process. Because of this reason, homeschooling is especially popular among Christians. Christianity is one of the few worldviews that claims one truth. While the existence of other beliefs is known and accepted, Christianity refutes the claim that all ideas are equally true. When it comes to education, homeschooling enables parents to teach their own values and religious beliefs alongside the more standard academic disciplines. Another reason that homeschooling is beneficial for some families is because it provides one-on-one (or close to one-on-one) instruction for children. That means that the child can be taught according to their learning style. This is especially advantageous for students who have a very hands-on or experiential learning style. Parents can turn almost any experience into a learning opportunity when they are living with their child's education in mind. Aside from the more obvious ideas like taking field trips to local missions, museums, or parks, families can turn trips to the grocery store into educational moments by encouraging Josh to count the number of bananas in a bunch, or to estimate the weight of the bananas, then check his estimate using a scale. While homeschooling provides a lot of freedom for the parents and children to learn in a style that works best for them, there are guidelines that need to be followed in order to prove that your child isn't just being given a twelve-year vacation. By keeping a journal of daily activities or creating a 'yearbook' of some of the projects that each child did over the course of a school year, parents can create a file for their children that will not only prove the advancement that their child made over the course of the year, but that will be a fun keepsake to look through and enjoy later on. No matter what your reasons are for considering homeschooling for your children, there are many web sites and support groups available to help you maneuver the legal and practical challenges of homeschooling your children.
