How to handle a partner who not only snores, but snores heavily?BY: DrRitu | Category: Health | Post Date: 2009-11-25
Snoring is a phenomenon that most of us do but we do not realize it. We snore when we are asleep and with the help of others feedback we come to know that we ‘also' snore. Studies show that men snore more than women. About 60% of men snore while sleeping and for women this percentage is about 40%. The tendency of snoring increases with age. Particularly when we pass the age of 30, our metabolism get slower and we gain weight. Obesity is the biggest reason of snoring. Obstruction of air in throat and nose is the reason behind snoring. The snoring is produced by the uvula's flapping vibrating against the upper throat palate. Fat deposition in the neck area causes the obstruction in the air passage. Alcohol consumption is another cause of snoring. Due to intake of alcohol, the control of mind on muscles decreases. The throat muscle in turn becomes loose and this increases the possibility of snoring. Alcohol consumption will cause even a non-obese person to snore. After alcohol consumption if one sleeps on his back, due to reduced muscle control, the neck muscle loosens and tongue fall back and blocks the air passage. To prevent snoring, the best solution is to reduce your weight. Always sleep on your side, and try to consume little or no alcohol in the late evening. You can also get surgical remedies to snoring but its not worth considering it because you can get same results for free if you only control your weight. By surgery the airway passage is expanded by removing excess tissue from the back of the throat. The tissues are also removed from the uvula and pharynx. But the problem is the huge side effects caused by this surgery. Snoring is a disease that should not be taken very lightly. Its not a serious problem but it must be given its due attention it deserved. Snoring may turn out to be a big social problem because a heavy snorer around you will give you sleepless nights. Snoring may cause a person huge embarrassments because of the disturbance his non-melodious snoring is causing to others. He may become a victim of teasing and rebuff. Studies show that heavy snorers will not have complete sleep in the night. This reduces their overall efficiency during the days work. You may find is surprising but your dentist has a solution for you in case you are a big snorer Your dentist can design and install a appliance called mandibular advancement splints in your mount which has proven to be very effective in curtailing the snoring. The mandibular splints pull the lower jaw forward thus affecting the tongue to come a little forward and away from the throat. Snoring is a bigger problem for the room partner than the snorer himself. The snore can cause sleepless night to his partner and this may lead to huge irritation and mental agony. The relationship is greatly hampered if proper understanding is not reached between partners. This may appear to be an irrelevant problem in the beginning, but in long run it has caused serious relationship and psychological problems. Use of ear plugs by the partner can ease a lot of tension between the mates. Try it.
