If you happen to live in an area where hurricanes are common, then you are likely aware of some emergency procedures. Being prepared for an emergency is always an advantage because it can save lives, reduce property damage and help people cope up with other possible problems. That said, an emergency kit that must be always on hand is the hurricane readiness kit which you may come in handy when the time comes.

You must be able to make a list of what you may need at least for a week's use. Portable water should be a priority. You can have them stored in water jugs or in gallon containers. Make sure there is water for drinking, for washing, cleaning and for sanitation uses. Then remember to stock many canned goods, instant coffee, drinks and juices and other dry goods that are ready to eat and drink. Remember to get a manual can opener to open up the canned goods. Make sure to have more paper plates, cups, glasses and other disposable utensils that may be used for eating and cooking. If you have a toddler, make sure to provide for milk formula or powdered milk that would last at least a week.

Keep in mind to have a first kit aid with manual for easy use. Place all medicines that are needed in a bag and place this into your hurricane readiness kit. Don't forget to also place some flashlights with extra batteries. You can also buy a battery operated radio and stock it into your hurricane kit. It would be good to also place pictures of your kids and all the members of the family just in case you may need them inside the kit.

You can also stock in matches, toiletries, garbage or disposable plastic bags, duct tapes and make sure you have extras of these. You'll never know how long you may be without electric power and how long the effects the hurricane may have in your area so it's better to be prepared. Remember to buy household disinfectants like household bleach to clean your area. Make sure to also have body soaps, lotions, toothpastes, shampoos and detergent that would last for many days. Make sure you have clothes that would keep everybody warm so have extra jackets, gloves, socks, blankets and sleeping bags. You can also have a fire extinguisher ready just in case and teach family members how to use it in case there is a need for it. If you have pets, make sure you have pet foods and drinking water for them, too.

It would also be good to have cash in some small denominations for easy use. Don't forget to secure all your legal document . in a safe place. Have a local map available for your use and keep a log of the telephone numbers and addresses of your friends and other relatives as well.

Include all family members in making out a good plan just in case you have to leave your home. Try to find out your area's emergency plan, emergency offices and evacuation centers. In keeping up with the readiness against hurricanes, you must always check on your household facilities like your water pipes, electric and gas supplies; make sure these are always in good shape and would not become possible dangers that may add more problems when a hurricane happens. Try to be updated about the news so always tune in to your radio or TV for any hurricane updates. Just in case you are asked to move out of your house, make sure to properly turn off all the appliances or power before leaving.

If there is no need for evacuation, you just need to stay indoors and secure the areas of your place. Keep yourself safe by staying away from your windows and doors; better yet try to keep these intact and more secured with hard plywood or hard boards. Most of all stay calm, be self-assured and be focused on everything that you have to do.
