Hyperthyroidism is the consequence of excessive secretion of hormone produced by thyroid gland one of the major glands of endocrine system which is located at the anterior part of the neck region. This hyper secretion of thyroid hormone causes increase in metabolic rate causing sudden irregular or rapid heartbeat, weight loss, nervousness sweating and irritability. Hyperthyroidism usually occurs at the age of 20-40 and more commonly found in women than men. This disease occurs due to unbalance in hormonal level and generates many problems inside the body. Signs and Symptoms: Hyperthyroidism overall increase the general metabolic rate which results in palpitation or rapid heart rate, increased perspiration, tremor and Shakiness, Shortness of breath, accompanied by weight loss, Insomnia, Anxiety, Increased appetite, bulging eyes, thickened skin over the shins, hands, face, back of feet. In crisis: very rapid pulse, fever, irregular menstrual periods, agitation, and delirium. What Causes Hyperthyroidism? Graves' disease is one of the most common causes of hyperthyroidism. It is an autoimmune disease in which immune system of the body generate antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland of your body to raise excessive thyroxine. Hyperfunctioning of thyroid nodules may also generate excessive thyroxine. Due to some unknown reason thyroid gland can be inflamed can cause excess thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism can also occurred by consuming too much of thyroid hormone when you are under treatment for hypothyroidism. Diagnosis of Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism is commonly diagnosed on the levels of free thyroxine hormone present in the plasma. Other tests that declare hyperthyroidism are: Sudden increase in metabolic rate in patient around +30 to +60 in severe hyperthyroidism and decrease in the level of TSH in plasma. Treatment Options: Many forms of treatment are present for hyperthyroidism. All the treatments available for hyperthyroidism have some advantages and disadvantages. In general, all these treatments are extremely effective with low side effects. As an initial treatment many hyperthyroidism patients are treated with antithyroid drugs. Propylthiouracil and Methimazole are the most popular medicine used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism. These medicines restrict the production of thyroxine hormone and are normally prescribed in high doses for 1-2 months till thyroid gland works normally. Beta-blocker medicines like Inderal, Tenormin and Lopressor are used to treat the symptoms induced by excessive thyroxin hormones, such as palpitations. For hyperthyroidism these medicines are prescribed for few weeks then gradually decrease the level of dose. Radioactive Iodine is also used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism. By giving radioactive iodine, thyroid cells get destroyed and not able to generate thyroxine hormone. Radioiodine treatment includes consuming a swallowing, drink, or capsule, which carries radioactive iodine. In advance stage of hyperthyroidism where the patient is not responding to anti thyroid drugs and radioiodine is unavailable then patients are treated with surgery called Thyroidectomy. Thyroidectomy involves taking out part of the thyroid gland. If you have a huge thyroid swelling called goiter and causing a great difficulty in neck region then surgery is the best option for hyperthyroidism. It is normally a safe operation, though compared with other operations risk is very small.
