Interesting facts about air. Various layers in Earth's atmosphere.BY: Diane | Category: Education | Post Date: 2008-11-30
Earth is surrounded by air composed of different gases which form our atmosphere. This unique composition of air contributes significantly to make our earth livable by absorbing the harmful ultraviolet solar radiation, protecting from falling meteors from external space and regulating the temperature. The main ingredients of dry air are (approx.) Nitrogen - 78% Oxygen - 21.% Argon 0.9% Carbon dioxide 0.04% Other 0.002% The mixture if these gases is called air. Earths atmosphere not only contains dry air but it also contains about 1% of water vapour. The concentration of air in earth's atmosphere decreases as we go farther from the earth's surface or at elevated points. Beyond 100 km to 120 km above earth's surface, the atmospheric effects are hardly noticeable. Various layers in Earth's atmosphere by altitude: Troposphere: This represents the atmosphere closest to the earth and varies between 6 to 17 km in height on various points of the earth. The troposphere contains roughly 80% of the total mass of the atmosphere. Temperature declines with height. Stratosphere: this layer extends from the troposphere to about 50 km. Stratosphere contains a high concentrations of ozone. Temperature increases with height. Mesosphere: It ranges the atmospheric band between 50 km to 85 km in height. The temperature decreases with height. This is also the place where metors burn up when they enter earth's surface. Thermosphere: It ranges the atmospheric band between 85 km to 690 km in height. The temperature increases with height. Ionosphere and Exosphere: Outer most bands and the space. What is Air Pollution: United States is the biggest producer of Air pollution. It comes from multiple sources factories, cars, power plants, dry cleaners, wildfires and even from materials in your home like paints. Breathing takes oxygen in and carbon dioxide out of the body. Internal air quality an important environmental issue. Air quality has greatly improved in recent years in developed countries due to stiff environmental regulations. What is Air Smog: Smog is created from a combination of pollutants that come from vehicle emissions, industrial and utility plants, and other sources, including nitrogen oxide (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM).
