Introducing the Apple's iPad: Revolutionary or Evolutionary?BY: Guest | Category: Technology | Post Date: 2010-02-04
Chat rooms, blogs, radio and television programs, and water coolers alike were abuzz with rumors when news of an upcoming announcement by Steve Jobs was made public. Jobs has used prior announcements like this one to unveil the iPod and iPhone, so the man with the Midas touch soon found himself the center of every form of media All the buzz surrounded the possibility of a new tablet, so it wasn't much of a surprise when Jobs pulled out the new iPad at his announcement on January 27, 2010. The development of the iPad has been a long time in coming. It has been said that Jobs has tried multiple times to develop a tablet computer, but had abandoned or shelved the project time and time again due to an inability to reach that elusive goal of long battery life, low cost, and inadequate memory. The iPad thus far seems to satisfactorily address two of these issues. With up to ten hours of battery life enabling you to surf the web, watch videos, or listen to music, there aren't many people who will have a problem with the battery running low on their iPad. This is crucial to creating a take-it-with-you device such as the iPad. If you have to worry about being connected to the wall, you might as well be at a desktop computer. One point for the iPad. The second key area is cost. Starting at $499, the iPad costs about the same as other computers with similar functions (well, except of course the Mac-only features like apps and iBook). Two points. The third point, so far, has yet to be awarded. Oddly enough, on the specification page (www.apple.com/ipad/specs), there isn't any information on how much memory the iPad has. Bloggers are speculating that this is because, frankly, it doesn't have much. Part of this may be because of the second point that we awarded: cost. In order to keep the price point low, Jobs may have sacrificed memory, which in the long term, may end up costing him more than he thinks. The majority of the critiques about the iPad thus far stem from its lack of innovation. While the design is up to expectations for Apple products, most of the functionality is similar or identical to that of standard laptops or the current iPhone. Jobs' announcement itself seems to belie this fact due to his incessant use of terms like revolutionary and magical. Jobs came off as more of a salesperson trying to convince himself of the product's superiority than a developer or visionary bursting at the seams to share the 'next best thing.' This anticipation and letdown was reflected not only in the blogosphere, but also in the stock market. The few days prior to the announcement, Apple stock was on the rise, but the days following the announcement, the stock prices lost more than the anticipation gained. The iPad officially is available starting at the end of March, 2010, so there is still time for the buzz and excitement to catch on and translate into sales.
