Currently, almost all Americans have concerns with regards to the medical care that they are going to receive. This is generally because of the costs of the premiums of the health insurance that is available to them. The self-employed, as well as the small businessmen, are the ones that are the most affected with this problem. The problem that these people are facing is that even though they are in desperate need of affordable health insurance plans for the state Medicaid plan, they don't have the necessary resources to support it. They still need to make a living as well and not only bound to pay the costs of expensive insurances.

When you are going to start your own business or be a self-employed person and you leave your current job to pursue this, you will be under an act of the government known as COBRA. COBRA or the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 guarantees that you are still going to be insured for the first 18 months of your self-employed career. The only catch is that COBRA can be very expensive, most especially to the small business owners who have so much at stake in the first few months in existence. Even though your recent employer will be paying part of your premium, which in fact is just 20%, you will be paying the bulk of your health insurance costs and there worst case is that you will be paying the whole lot by your self.

What if you don't use the COBRA plan?
If you opt not to take advantage of the COBRA, you still have some options left to you. This would generally be applicable to people who are in good health, with good credit rating, and no rescinded policies in his life time. This option is buying your health care plans in the open market through private insurance companies. This is generally more expensive than the COBRA plan but if you have all three of these characteristics then you should do fine. One thing that you should be aware of is that you really need to have a set amount of money that is from your own pocket so that you will be prepared once an emergency arises. Just calculate the amount that you will need and you should be fine. If it is possible, you should also get an insurance plan that is the most streamlined that you can possibly find which is meant for you and your family. Another thing that you should keep in mind is to always have coverage even if its just the basics. There is a great chance that you will go bankrupt and even loose your life savings just because you did not have health insurance and you had to pay for the medical bills all by yourself. This is what most Americans have fallen prey of which is around 60% in total.

Although if, by any chance, you have a COBRA plan, you will still be covered the same as when you were still employed. The only catch is the COBRA can still be costly for you but it will be worth it should the situation arise. Try to cover your pre existing condition/s as well because this will give you a big blow in the future should you not choose to cover it. Once your 18 months have expired for your COBRA plan, it would be best if you would get the services of an insurance broker when searching for a private insurer so that your pre-existing condition can be covered.

If you have a spouse then you can try a group spouse plan before proceeding to a private health insurance plan. This will decrease your insurance costs tremendously. You can then start your own business. One great benefit that you can derive out of a spouse group plan is that insurance companies will never be able to rate you in terms of your premiums from your pre-condition and that cannot refuse you a family plan.
The best thing about New York is that it is considered to be a guarantee issue state wherein they will not and cannot raise or deny your premiums just based solely on your pre-condition. But the sad part is that there are some states that differs with what New York offers.
