A few years ago, it would be unheard of to have met your spouse using the internet. These days, it's not only a well known dating style, tens of millions of people are registered on online dating sites like eHarmony.com and match.com. The basic premise is simple: post a bit of information about yourself, indicate what you're looking for, and send a message to people you find interesting and attractive. In practice, however, whole systems of strategies have developed to help people find Mr./Mrs. Right, or Mr./Mrs. Right Now. Before you join any of these dating sites, make sure you know what your goal is. If you are looking to meet a few new people and possible make some friends, there are sites and strategies for that. If you are looking for that one person to marry and spend the rest of your life with, that person may be online as well. Each dating site is geared toward a different group of people. eHarmony.com explicitly states in its user agreement that it is not for people who are already married. Their process is also relatively in-depth compared to a lot of the other dating web sites that are available. Instead of just have the basic information, eHarmony users complete a personality profile, and then other users are suggested to them based on their calculated compatibility. This may sound formulaic, but a 2007 study by Harris Interactive shows that eHarmony is responsible for 2% of the marriages in the United States. Match.com is the other big player in the online dating market. They tout on their web site that 'everyone knows somebody who's found love at match.com.' Their system is comparable to eHarmony.com's system, but instead of touting their success rate, match.com highlights a guarantee that you will find someone special in six months, or you will get another six months of their service free. What is unclear (even when reading the fine print) is what their definition of 'someone special' is. Aside from these two major players, there are innumerable smaller web sites designed to cater to specific locations, demographics, and interests groups. A search for 'martial arts dating sites' on Google recently yielded about 1,200,000 web sites in 0.32 seconds. 'Cook dating sites' came back with 878,000 web sites in 0.3 seconds. Even 'Farsi dating sites' resulted in about 145,000 web sites in 0.29 seconds. The options are pretty close to endless. When you are deciding which web site to go with, take a look at the pros and cons of each site first. While it might be fun to find another person who is seriously hooked on World of Warcraft to find a date on datecraft.com, the more qualifiers you add to your search, the harder it may be to find that special someone. But then again, if you know that you have high standards and won't settle for anyone, using a dating web site might be just what you need to weed out those low performers.
