More Than Just Dinner and a Movie: Getting to Know One Another

Dating can be a lot of fun. It can also be really nerve wracking. I think that's why so often we go to dinner and a movie together for a first date. It takes some of the pressure off; you really don't have to worry about keeping up a conversation when you are going to sit in front of a screen for two hours, do you? And more than that, once the movie is over and you go out to dinner, if all else fails you can talk about the movie together.

There are a few different camps on what is considered the purpose of dating. On one extreme are those who believe that you should only date someone who you would be willing to marry. The other extreme sees dating as -hooking up-: Meeting someone at a club, calling it a date, and then going back to their place later for, um, you know.

No matter where you fall along this spectrum, keep in mind that you never really know when (or if) you will fall in love with someone you start your relationship with by just going on a date. What's even more mind-boggling is that you don't know whether that person is going to fall in love with you. In either case, what you initially saw as an innocent time to have fun with this other person may soon have a lot more emotional attachment than you bargained for.

Because of this, you should be sure to look at any potential date with the same eyes and standards that you would use when looking at a potential spouse. Do you find him attractive? This is the easiest one, because you probably wouldn't go on a date with him if you didn't think he was attractive. Would you introduce him to your family? That one's tougher. Even if your relationship with your family is strained, family is a relationship that you have forever. Marriage is as well. If the two don't mix well, you are bound to have a lot of struggles later. Yes, love is important, but if the only thing you know about a person is that you love him/her, then you should take some steps to remedy that.

When you do go on that dinner and a movie date, be intentional about the conversation over dinner. Don't treat it like an interview, but remember that every minute you spend with this person you are developing your relationship further. Why not take advantage of that and deepen your understanding of one another so that your relationship is based on reality, instead of what you think is true of the person. Or, instead of doing the typical dinner and a movie date, find a more conversation-friendly activity like going on a picnic, to the beach, or on a hike.

So don't be afraid to ask questions! Everything you learn about a person will either give you further indications that this may in fact be Mr. or Ms. Right, or will help you decide to end the relationship sooner so that can find Mr./Ms. Right sooner.
