Natural Family Planning and Understanding Your Menstrual CycleBY: Guest | Category: Women | Post Date: 2010-02-05
When people think about Natural Family Planning, one of the first things that come to mind is the prevention of pregnancy. While there are many different methods available for birth control, Natural Family Planning gives women more than just a chance to delay pregnancy, it also gives them a chance to understand their own menstrual cycle. Most girls learn about menstruation in elementary or middle school from their teachers or parents. While the basic information can be conveyed in a classroom setting, the application of this information differs depending on the girl (or woman). Natural Family Planning is one way to understand the differences in each woman's cycle. Natural Family Planning involves keeping track of your menstrual cycle in order to know when your fertile days are. Because of hormonal changes, your basal body temperature and cervical fluid are altered depending on whether or not you are fertile. By checking your temperature on a daily basis and assessing your cervical fluid, you can track when you are fertile or when you become pregnant. The system itself is rather simple, though it requires some diligence and record-keeping on your part. Perhaps one of the greatest joys about using the Natural Family Planning method to become pregnant is that you can pinpoint the day that you conceived. This not only gives you an assurance of whether or not you are pregnant, but it also helps you know when your child's estimated date of delivery will be. It's not uncommon for couples who use Natural Family Planning to have a better sense of when their baby will be born than the doctors (this is especially true if the woman's menstrual cycle is not regular). Let's talk about a few things that Natural Family Planning is not. Natural Family Planning is not the Rhythm Method. The Rhythm Method uses forecasting of when a woman's fertile time will be, based on a record of her prior cycles. When used as a contraceptive, the Rhythm Method has a 9% failure rate in the first year when perfectly followed, but typically has a 25% failure rate. There are many reasons why this method can fail. A typically irregular cycle, travelling, sickness, and even stress can cause a woman's cycle to stray from its standard pattern. Natural Family Planning is also different from the Fertility Awareness Method. While the two methods are almost identical (they both use temperature and cervical fluid signs to help track your cycle), Natural Family Planning involves a time of abstinence during the fertile time if you are trying not to become pregnant; The Fertility Awareness Method allows the use of barrier methods of contraception like male or female condoms. This is one reason why many people opt not to use the Natural Family Planning method; because it is primarily promoted and taught by the Catholic Church, it also involves some of their theology. Whether you are interested in Natural Family Planning as a method of birth control or as a way to get to know your own menstrual cycle more, there are resources available to help. NFPandmore.org has information about the method itself and trained teachers that you can talk to in order to have your questions answered.
