Okay, I admit it - My Mr. Wrongs Were (at Least Partly) My FaultBY: Guest | Category: Relationships | Post Date: 2010-02-04
Have you ever had to watch a friend date the wrong kind of guy over and over again? You know, the one who runs up to you to tell you all about this wonderful new guy, and you cringe because you know that the inevitable waterworks will come once she wises up and he either dumps her or she realizes what kind of guy he really is? Well, that's me. Welcome to my Mr. Wrongs. The story starts normal enough. I had my first college date. Johnny and I shared a class together, spent some time together on campus, and eventually took that step to go to a movie together. It was a lot on fun. Until the ride home, that is. When he took a deep breath and prefaced the conversation by saying he wanted to tell me something, I was concerned. When Johnny revealed the secret, I was stunned. His secret was enough to make that our last date together, but our friendship survived. We spent many days in the quad together, pointing out to each other the guys that we found attractive. Strike one. Not too long after this, I met Adam. We were coworkers and had the chance to stare at each other from across the check-out stands. He was cute, funny, and really sweet. We went on a few dates together and I enjoyed every minute of it. Not to mention the look he got in his eyes when he looked at me. He asked if he could show me something on the way home. We stopped by his place, and I noticed the confederate flag on his wall. Okay, maybe that's a warning sign, but it's not totally out of place. The 'White Man's Bible' on the shelf was my second warning (though I did find irony in the fact that there would be a 'White Man's Bible' given that Jesus was middle-eastern). Finally, Adam just came out with it and told me that he was a Skinhead: 'It's not that I don't like black people, I just think of them like you think of dogs.' Strike two. At this point the analogy breaks down. While I wish that I could say that there was a strike three and I was out, I have to admit that there were a few 'strike threes.' You could count the guy that punched a hole in the wall right next to my head, or the one who seemed just like Mr. Right, but we didn't share our core beliefs (and we were both passionate about our beliefs). No matter how you slice it, I wasn't doing well on the relationships front. And everyone - my family, my friends, and even those boyfriends - knew it. That's one of the reasons that I decided not to date anymore. No dating, courting, flirting, nothing. I was going to forget that men existed and just be content with life as it was. That's when it happened. Only a few months after I wrote off men entirely, I realized that I couldn't get one of my guy friends out of my head. Apparently, he felt the same way about me. We started dating and now after being together for almost six years, we have a life, a family, and a home that I could never have imagined. Despite the fact that he had been my friend through all of my strike out, I hit a home run.
