Protect Yourself From Elbow InjuriesBY: Eve | Category: Health | Post Date: 2010-01-18
That part of your arm that needs extra special care and attention is the elbow. When you suffer an injury on your elbow, your whole arm is rendered helpless, thus you are prevented from using it. It would be a good thing to know of good ways to keep your elbow away from harm. Don't put unnecessary stress to your arm. Avoid carrying too many heavy things at once. Doing so would put a lot of stress to your arm and elbow. When you are engaged in high activity sports, try to wear protective gears fro your arms and elbows because these body parts are mostly prone to injury during such activities. Don't make accidents happen because of neglect. Avoid standing on shaky and wobbly chairs or objects that would cause a fall and likely to injure your arms and elbows as well. Take away all obstructions along your pathway most especially along the stairs where you may fall down and injure yourself. When driving, remember to strap your seat belt and protect yourself from possible accidents. Remember to eat foods that make your bones strong. Have a well balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, lean meat and fish. Go for more calcium-rich foods like dark leafy vegetables, yogurt, milk, cheese and other dairy supplements. Stay away from alcohol and avoid too much smoking. There are good exercises for the arms and elbows. You can flex your muscles by stretching properly, bending or moving circles with your arms to exercise them. You may use light weights to strengthen your arms and elbows; do this slowly and if needed, you can also seek the advice of your doctor. Squeezing with a tennis ball would help add more power to your arm and elbow. Just in case there is some pain on your elbow, you must immediately put some cold compress to avoid swelling. Seek medical treatment to prevent your injured elbow from getting worst. Make sure you don't injure your elbow when you are sleeping. Avoid placing your arms under your head or your elbow bent under your head while sleeping. Instead, use soft pillows as support for your elbows and your head as well. Don't make it a habit to lean on your elbows. Try to lean your elbows on the chair's rest arms preferably covered with elbow pads for your comfort. Keep your elbow in air splint if you have already injured it. Make sure to securely do it to avoid unnecessary discomfort and pain. Remember to always place your injured elbow in an elevated position to ease the pressure of pain. An injured elbow takes some time to heal. It would be wise if you start the use of it with gentle movements and with no heavy activities. Make sure to properly take care of your elbow injury so that you can have complete healing and start to regain the use of it again.
