San Antonio River Walk - Wonderful Hours in the Slow Lane - North American TravelsBY: Silverhairster | Category: Travel | Post Date: 2009-11-10
On recent trip to San Antonio Texas as photographer for a professional conference, I had free time on Sunday morning. I was hoping to have a chance to photograph the San Antonio River Walk and that was my opportunity. So I donned a pair of walking shoes, grabbed my digital camera, an extra battery, and headed out. Believe me, whether you are using an advanced digital camera or a point and shoot disposable you will end up with some great shots, because the River Walk is photogenic as a stunning fifties movie star. -The Crowne Plaza Hotel on the River Walk-, the conference site, provided easy access to the River Walk and while the Plaza is a great place to stay there are numerous hotels and beds & breakfasts either on the river or nearby. The River Walk, started as a flood control measure in the 1930's and evolved into a wonderful place for "townies" and visitors alike to spend an hour or day away from the frenzy of everyday life. First impressions are said to be the best and truest and in the case of the Riverwalk the first impression is spectacularly true. Following the walkway beside the winding San Antonio River every new vista provides another visual enchantment and photo opportunity. I found myself continually drawn forward by the splendor of each new vista that presented the sparkling brilliance of the river, sun dappled walk ways and luxuriant tropical plantings framed by lovely arched bridges and terraces of cut stone. After three hours of walking and clicking away I happened upon two friends from the conference on the way to lunch. That sounded like a winner to me as the River Walk has a great choice of restaurants from which to choose. Choices range from delicious Tex Mex dishes at places such as Casa Rio to the quiet elegance of upscale Fig Tree that serves an eclectic and elegant fare that will please the pickiest of diners. We chose the Casa Rio and were not disappointed. They serve a delicious variety to Tex Mex dishes with choices to please any palette. After dinner I had an hour before I was due back at the hotel for a photo shoot, I decided to spend it with more explorations and photography. When time ran short I flagged a river taxi to return to the hotel. The Rio Taxi Service is a great convenience. If you want to get to a specific site, such as I did at the end of the day, all you have to do is wave and a taxi will come along side. The taxi boat drivers have tickets on-board for purchasing convenience. Since I am no longer a "spring chicken" and I managed to get lost, a long way from my hotel, which came as no surprise to my lovely wife Carla, I flagged down a water taxi and let the boat operator rescue me and land me at the steps of the Crowne Plaza. If your time is short or if you have a day or two, I recommend starting your day or hours on the River Walk in a River Tour Boat. The tours are thirty-five to forty minutes long and cover two and half miles. A running narration provided by a knowledgeable tour boat operator assures that you will miss little and provide you with many ideas of things to do when you are back ashore. You can't beat this as a starting point for your time here and tour boat tickets can be purchased at Historia (under Market and Alamo Streets), at Clearwater (located at River Center Mall (Commerce and Bowie Streets) or the Aztec Theater (Crockett and St. Mary's Streets). I didn't have time to take advantage of the River Walk's new -extension- but I plan to return soon and travel it via a water taxi to explore this new "Museum Reach- that stretches north along the San Antonio River and connects the River Walk to the San Antonio Museum of Art, along the way you'll see the one hundred twenty five year old Pearl Brewery, now a vibrant urban village. The -extension- also features many art studios and galleries featuring local, national and international artists. An interesting feature of this new addition to the River Walk is a lock and dam system designed to overcome the nine foot rise in elevation to access the San Antonio Museum of Art landing. The River Walk also hosts many festivals and events. In the "growing season" a Farmers Market each Saturday offers fresh vegetables and flowers. Yearly events like the Labor Day Arts & Crafts Show, the Holiday Arts and Crafts Show, and the fun Halloween event Corona Coffins on Parade are some of the exciting events to plan your visit around. I hope this article will encourage you to put San Antonio's River Walk on your -visit soon- list and when you next are in San Antonio for business or the yearly family vacation, believe me, it is a -must see- and best of all it's free! I promise you will be happy you did and want to return again and again!
