Soy Candles: Benefits for Your Health, the Environment and the EconomyBY: Candle Allure | Category: Health | Post Date: 2009-12-11
It is estimated that candles are burned in 80 percent of homes in the U.S. According to the National Candle Association, candle sales are approaching $2 billion annually. Roughly 90% of candles burned are made of paraffin wax. Although many of us enjoy burning candles we often do not realize that many of the candles we burn emit toxins into the air we breathe. Because paraffin wax is petroleum based, the presence of chemicals and toxins may exist. These chemicals can be released into the air when the candle is burned. Paraffin candles may contain up to 11 carcinogenic compounds. An air quality researcher, David Krause, has document ...d evidence that candle soot particles contain many of the same compounds given off from burning diesel fuel. The use of paraffin wax along with the combination of synthetic fragrances, dyes, chemical fixatives and wicks that include metal or zinc may contribute to poor air quality within our homes. Soy wax has several benefits over paraffin wax candles for the following reasons: NON-TOXIC: Soy wax is non-toxic and burns cleaner than paraffin. With no petrol-carbon soot which can leave residue on walls and other items in your home; as well as release toxic carcinogens into the air you breathe. An added benefit is that soy candles are less likely to trigger allergies. STIMULATES THE U.S. ECONOMY: Because soy wax is produced from soybeans grown in the United States, American farmers benefit when soy is used to make candles. If soy wax replaced common paraffin wax, an estimated 60 million pounds of soy beans would be required for annual candle production. Purchasing products made of soybeans contributes to economic growth by directly impacting the U.S. agricultural sector, unlike some paraffin wax which may come from other countries. RENEWABLE RESOURCE, BIODEGRADABLE & WATER SOLUBLE: Soybeans are a natural and renewable source. As a result, soy wax is naturally biodegradable, and water soluble. Soy candle wax can easily be removed using soap and water. LONG BURNING: Soy candles burn slower and cooler than paraffin wax, creating a longer burning candle. Soy candles burn an average of 30-50% longer than paraffin wax candles and as a result are more cost effective. BURNS AT A LOWER TEMPERATURE: Because soy wax burns at a lower temperature than paraffin wax, Soy Candles are considered the safest types of candles to burn in your home. HOLDS SCENT WELL: Soy candles have great fragrance absorption, and when lit, they slowly release fragrance throughout the life of the candle. Soy candles will not lose scent over time as with some other types of wax. Candles have many uses, Relaxation, Home Décor, Stimulating the Senses Mood Setting, aromatherapy and much more. Choose Soy candles as a healthy alternative to paraffin wax. You will have the peace of mind knowing that you are not only supporting your health, you are supporting the environment as well as the American economy!
