Spotting a Liar - Tips to Know the Signs of LyingBY: Eve | Category: Others | Post Date: 2009-11-25
You can have all the reasons in the world to justify why you have to lie. Some say they lie because there are situations that call for them to do so like saving a life, when someone is in danger or they don't want to hurt their loved one's feelings. Maybe these are valid reasons, but how long do you have to lie using the same old reasons? For all you know, lying can become a habit. You can become so good at doing it that even you can't distinguish what you are saying is the truth or a lie. That is the problem and that brings a lot of complications. So how can you tell if a person is lying to you? Be observant. Watch the body movements and facial expressions. The signs to look for are the following: - The person is fidgety, hands scratch the nose, ears and back of head - The tone of voice is unusually higher than the normal tone - Body is taut and rigid, the face turning pale - Lips quivering, lips turn pale and there's tightness around the mouth area - No direct eye contact with you - Heavy breathing, nostrils flared and open wide - Hands are restless, they perspire, placed inside pockets If you talk to the person notice the clearing of the throat, notice the hands placed across the stomach like making a distance from you. You would also notice that if you ask a question, it takes some time before you get an answer. The person has no direct eye contact and looks either up, around, below and not directly at you. Speech is garbled, voice is a bit soft, or if loud it sounds in a high pitch. You should also observe how the person smiles, it just stays on the lips and does not reach the eyes...there's a conflict there somewhere; you must be able to distinguish that well. The person also feels uncomfortable during the talk. They can always be on the defensive mood, speak in monologues often, and they easily become rattled. If you change the topic instantly while talking to this person, and they follow suit to the topic change, make a mental note of that...this person is lying....it's like they are glad you changed the topic so they thought they found an escape.. Try to observe any sarcasm or dry humor while talking. There are times they would use a phrase like 'Believe me'. Be alert for similar deceptive phrases. It goes without saying that you don't want your family or friends to lie to you. It's better to know the truth earlier than later to avoid further problems. So, think it over, think really hard if you are still capable of trusting a person who lies to you.
