Taking Care of Your Pet FerretBY: Eve | Category: Animals | Post Date: 2010-01-11
A ferret can be considered a good pet. It has a basic sociable yet mischievous nature and it can be full of fun as well. It also has a prying attitude, as it likes to snoop around a large place and go about things just like any other pet. There are now more people who take in ferrets as pets and as such, it is just good to be equipped with the proper knowledge of taking care of it. A ferret belongs to the weasel family. It is a mammal and it is carnivorous. You can place it in a big cage made of strong wire. Provide a good enough space for it to move around. You must also provide a litter box which your pet ferret will be using to do its thing of nature. You must also place some toys like hard plastic balls or wooden blocks. You can also make a small soft bed for it to sleep on, as the ferret likes to sleep for as many as 18 hours. Provide good and fresh water always. Make sure to also clean the cage at least once a week to get rid of bacteria or germs. The diet of your pet ferret may be lots of chicken liver and boiled eggs. You can also buy ferret food from pet stores. Just make sure you read the labels because there are certain food contents that the ferret may be allergic to. Don't give foods that contain cornmeal and mineral oil because these kinds are not fit for the ferret's digestion. You must take care not to over feed your pet ferret, either. Its being overweight may cause health problems. If there are excess foods that are left, you must take these out and throw them away so. Left over foods may cause bacteria to thrive and infect your ferret's health. In some cases, the ferret may be a fragile pet because it may need vaccinations to ensure its good health especially in its younger stage. But as it matures, it will be able to be healthy on its own as long as you do the proper way of taking care of it, too. Taking care of the ferret involves some chores for you to do. Give it a bath at least once a month. Be sure to keep its ears and feet clean always. Make sure its nails are well-trimmed. Remember to check its gums and teeth; perhaps get a good vet to do this for you so if there are needs to be done, then the vet would be able to do so immediately. Check the ferret's fur (skin) for fleas as these would cause discomfort and health problems as well. As the ferret has such a playful and prying habit, make sure to provide enough time for the ferret to play around. You can set it free for a few minutes and let it go around your grounds. If you do so, make sure to secure your home. Make it ferret- proof by locking all doors of your rooms, closing all cabinets and other furniture with doors, clean all clutter on the floor and make sure to cover up all holes, corners and other nooks in your place. Make sure your plant boxes are out of its way because the ferret likes to play with them. The ferret also likes to eat plants, but this is not allowed because plants are not good for its diet. Plants may have ill effects on the health of the ferret. Bear in mind that the ferret has a very nosy nature and it has no fear to do all the things it would want to do if it sees the opportunity to do so. Keeping your ferret safe is a good way of properly taking care of it as well.
