Teaching is a career that has been considered as one of the most self-less jobs in the world. It involves the teacher's time to provide knowledge to the students, reinforce good values and help develop skills that are important to improve lives. Teachers are commonly referred to as the second parents of the children because they spend almost the whole day with each other everyday for the entire school year.

If you ask the person why they chose teaching as a career, their reasons are far and wide. Some took up teaching because they're a family of teachers. So it's like following a family tradition dating back to their oldest generations. Others say they got into teaching by accident because it was the first opportunity that came along so they just followed through and got to enjoy the job. Still, others say they have a fondness for kids so they think that teaching is the best way to get around kids. There are a few who said that they wanted to make a difference in life and they wanted to teach because this would give them the chance to help young people of the next generation to become better citizens and help in making the world a better place to live in. That 's one of the best reasons I've heard so far...

Personally, I admire teachers. Imagine them handling a room of about 30-50 students with different moods, characters and skills. They have to show patience, understanding and compassion to the students. Teachers also have to use some of their creativity to make their students interested in their studies. They not only teach subjects, they would also have to mold the characters of these students by teaching them proper values and helping them in distinguishing right from wrong, encouraging them to think positively and honing their skills in reading, writing and social relations.

Presently, a good example of a teacher is today's CNN's Hero of the year-
Efren Penaflorida, a young man from Manila, Philppines who started the "push cart education" about ten years ago .As young as he was at that time, only eighteen years old, Efren believed in the power of teaching as a tool to get young people like him to learn the basics of reading and writing, cleanliness and good values. He and some other classmates and friends would push their cart loaded with donated books, pencils, scratch papers, a mini blackboard with chalk, some goodies like biscuits and candies, soap, clean rags and some toys. These were all part of his teaching methods to lure street kids to learn. They pushed their cart along streets where there were lots of children and they would find a corner to have their teaching session. The goodies and other stuff were their way of rewarding the kids for joining their teaching sesion. Efren and his friends would go from one place to the other just to teach young kids every weekend. This started a chain of 'pushcart education' and from one pushcart , there are now about 10,000 pushcarts all over his country pursuing the same advocacy he started- to teach.

When he came home, he was treated like a hero. When interviewed in a radio program recently, Efren responded to the question asked of him what inspired him to do all those things, he simply replied that ' if you have hope in your heart, try to find it. If you can help other people improve their lives then you just have to believe that you can do it, without expecting anything in return..."

I guess that says it all. Teaching is a career that that does not really pay well enough. But as a teacher and knowing that you have somehow helped turn your students into better persons would be more than payment enough. Helping develop their minds and changing their lives prove that teaching is a career worthy of getting into after all.
