Textile Recycling: An Effective Method to Help Save Our EnvironmentBY: Eve | Category: Nature | Post Date: 2009-12-16
What is textile recycling? This basically refers to the process of making use of clothing and fabrics over again after they have been produced or made from the manufacturing companies which created them. This also means salvaging, reprocessing, reclaiming and reusing these fabrics and clothing into other useful things other than clothes. More industries are now aware of this process and they try to practice this to help serve the environment. Most companies are also aware that the manufacturing process of these textiles can do harmful damage to the environment so they do something to somehow reduce this problem. Since these textiles are made from biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials, and some natural fibers, the kind of recycling to be done must be according to what these materials are best to be made into that can help protect the environment in more ways than one. The method of textile recycling resulted to a recorded study of about 48% cast-off or used clothing, approximately 20% are made into cleaning materials like rags and the rest of about 26% is used to produce fiber to create new products. Textile recycling also resulted to better economics since it provided job opportunities for people. More people got into curtain- making, making rags, blankets, accessory-making like belts, ribbons, laces and others. This also made jobs for people to make socks, handbags, shoes, gloves, hats and other products that could be created with these recycled textiles. There were more opportunities for a family to start a small family business by purchasing these recycled textiles and making useful products out of them. The small patches of textiles can be made into ribbons, doll accessories and even small decors and adornments for the home. They can also be used to create pretty cards, gifts, bags, belts, hats and hankies. The larger textiles can be used to make children's clothes, socks and other pretty accessories. The family only has to use their imagination and creativity and with some research online, then the business starts off well enough to earn some money. The method of textile recycling also opened some other opportunities for other businesses to stay alive. Those who have thrift stores buy these recycled textiles to be sold in their stores. There are recycling outlets which also purchase these textiles which in turn they sell to other outlets. Charity shops also benefited from textile recycling since they are open to accept these kinds of donations to be distributed to the poor who need them. More bargain stores and bargain activities have risen up to avail of textile recycling since they use these textiles for their products to be sold in bulk and they usually get good bargains for these. Textile recycling also teaches everyone to reuse, reduce and recycle these products instead of throwing them away. Since these are non-biodegradable, they clog our drainage and waterways. If thrown into incinerators, they cause pollution and cause more damage to the air around us. To be able to further educate people about textile recycling, good advertising must be done to help people appreciate them. People can write about the benefits of textile recycling in newspapers, health books, online, blogs and other articles that more people can read about. Perhaps it would also help if the community in each area would start their own way of implementing textile recycling and involve people in such activities. Thru our collected efforts of informing, teaching, educating and making more people aware of the good benefits of textile recycling, then we are all helping save our environment in our own little way.
