The Hardest Thing I've Done? Having a Baby, Naturally!BY: Guest | Category: Women | Post Date: 2010-02-05
There's a reason that the curse that was given to Adam and Even after they sinned in the Garden of Eden included pain during childbirth. Maybe, that's why some women curse so much during labor, and why natural childbirth is not the preferred method of having a child in areas that have access to pain medication. There are those, however, who believe that childbirth is not a problem to be medicated, but a process that the female body was designed to go through. For those women who choose to have their child without the aid of medication, the experience can be incredibly satisfying, richly rewarding, and strengthening to both their marriage and their relationship with their child. There are many reasons that a woman would decide to have a child without the use of medication. For some, it stems from an understanding that the body knows what to do when it comes to childbirth, so our role during labor and delivery should be to help that process along. For others, it is a safety issue for both the child and the mother; some mothers with high-risk pregnancies, such as those with gestational diabetes, feel like adding in pain-relieving drugs to the birthing process can only complicate an already complicated pregnancy. When a couple decides that they want to attempt to have their child naturally, they have many different options to help manage the pain associated with childbirth. In yoga, women learn how to strengthen the muscles used in childbirth, as well as how to relax the muscles that can hamper the smooth delivery of a child. Yoga also helps women learn to control their emotions and thoughts in a way that will enable them to relax and focus on their goal while they are in labor and delivery. Other techniques are also used to help alleviate the pain and help the woman focus on allowing her body to progress with labor. A birthing ball (an exercise ball made with thicker plastic) is used to help the woman achieve more comfortable positions. Some women even choose to deliver their baby while sitting on the birthing ball. The birthing ball can also be used during pregnancy for exercises that will help the woman become stronger for the delivery. Some hospitals have birthing pools or showers available for laboring women. The combination of warmth and a reduction of the amount of pressure on the body can help a woman focus on what her body is doing, instead of on the pain itself. The husband can also have a key role in the natural birthing process. He can help by talking his wife through a visualization technique to help her to relax and allow her body to progress through labor. He can also help by massaging different areas of her body that are tense. It is a good idea to bring tennis balls in your hospital bag so that your husband can use them as he massages you. By pressing his forearms against the tennis balls on your back, your husband will keep his hands from getting too tired early on in labor. No matter how much you prepare for your natural childbirth experience, keep in mind that the most important outcome of childbirth is a healthy baby. If medical intervention is necessary, don't let it get you down. Your desire for natural childbirth most likely stems from your desire for a healthy child, and if a different step is needed, just remember that your child will still be in your arms at the end of the day.
