Good and powerful memory is one of the most important tools a human mind can have to increase their effectiveness in life. The world keeps on feeding endless information's in our head. Our mind does an excellent job of filtering and storing few useful from a gamut of irrelevant information's. The data once stored in the mind is retrieved by our conscious brain depending on its utility and need. Our mind is like a filing cabinet, and well stored file will be easier to locate and retrieve. A disorganized filing cabinet will be difficult to manage. When we are talking about increasing memory power, we actually mean to increase the effectiveness of our mind by making the stores information's retrievable as and when required. God has given us a beautiful gift in the form of brain. This is one mechanism in our mind which works fool proof. No matter what we are doing, the information's are getting stored any ways. But if we are not storing the information's consciously, we will have difficulty in locating and retrieving the same when required. Our mind will give us signal as if no information is there for reference but in reality there are information but it is untraceable.

To increase the memory power we have to understand how our mind works. Our mind works with ‘hook and chain' mechanism. Mind is like a huge blank wooden board, which allows you to store information in the form of hooks hammered on the surface. A child's mind is blank, when he first sees his momma; a hook gets embedded in his mind saying that this is one person who will take care of me. The hook of his mummy is the first hook that a child develops in his mind. Hence forth what every data base he will develop in his mind will be linked with his mummy's hook. The second thing a child remembers is his father. The child draws a chain from his mummy's hook and joins it with his fathers hook. He remembers his father through his mother. Henceforth whatever information he will add to his data base will be linked to his father and mother hook. That is why it is said that the parents should talk to their child as much as possible. When I mean talk I mean conveying information. Right from birth a child has no vocabulary; hence parents use sign language to develop hooks in the child's mind. The more the hooks the more links a child can develop and bigger his data base grows.

Let's take a small example. Suppose you are watching a news channel on television. You will notice that whenever sports news will come you will become very interested. It means you have lot of hooks in your mind related to sports. So whatever news is getting telecast your mind is chaining it with new hooks. But similarly when news of stock market finance comes you prefer to change the channel. This indicates that you have very few hooks in your mind related to finance. A students studying in school is developing those very first hooks in his mind. These first hooks acts as an anchor hooks for all other information's they will gather in their future life. That is why it is very important for a child to study really hard during their initial years of academics. After the child completes his secondary education till then he has developed too many anchor hooks in his mind that will be a big help for him in his higher studies and future life.
