This article is written by travel consultants for travellers is about not only an alternative to the Galapagos Islands but tells about a place that is worth going to even if you have already been to the Galapagos or are on your way there. This part of the world is quite amazing. The annual humpback migration north is a must see if you are in this part of the world and the exceptional welcome and friendlyness of the staff at Punta Ayampa Beach Lodge.

I have travelled to many places around the world but South America is my favorite place to travel. There is so much to see and do that you are spoilt for choice.

One of the best places that I went to was in Ecuador, a place called Ayampa. The place we stayed in was amazing. It is called Punta Ayampa Beach Lodge. This area is one of the few places in the world where the rain forest comes all the way down to the ocean. The beach lodge sits up on hill, surrounded by rainforest overlooking the beach. The staff there are the best staff I came across on my travels, They were the nicest and most helpful people.

Ayampa is about a three hour drive from Guayaquil and the lodge can organize a transfer by car for 120 USD or you can get a bus for around 60 USD, but the bus could take up to 4 - 5 hrs. There are little towns not to far form the lodge that are great for local goods and for bars and food. The guys at the lodge can organize excursions such as, horse riding through the rainforest which is amazing, Canopying (using a zip line to move form tree to tree in the rain forest) and many other activities. The main reason we went to this place is because of the humpback whale migration that takes place every year. From around the start of May through to August, the humpbacks migrate north form the Antarctic all the way to the warmer waters around the equator to breed.

The whales come very close to the shore in they're thousands. During they're mating season the males show off they're skills to the females by, what is called breeching. They are not 100% sure why they do this. It is either to show off to the females in a bid to mate or else they just do it for fun. We were late arriving to this place so we didn't get to see the breeching as the whales were moving on, but the guys in the lodge say that at the height of the migration (June July) you can actually see the whales breeching from the lodge.

As far as I can remember the cost to go out whale watching is 90 USD. You go out for the whole day and around lunch time stop on one of the islands. This Island is called Isla de la Plata and is the poor mans Galapagos. It has many of the bird species seen on the Galapagos. On this island you go for a walk all around it and view the flora and fauna which is native to the area and the Galapagos Islands. Blue Footed Boobies, Albatros etc.

For these reasons this part of the Ecuadorian cost is known as the poor mans Galapagos. It is truly an amazing place. The Galapagos Islands are directly off this part of the coast. We started to run short of money and had to move on form South America at this point but we heard from the locals that you could pay some of the fisherman with the bigger boats to take you to the Galapagos at a fraction of the cost if there were enough of you. (Don't hold me to that though)
