College is an investment of your time, talent, and finances. While the general education requirements provide a solid foundation of general knowledge and skills, the courses that you take in your major will pave the way for your future success in your career. If you choose your major wisely, you increase your chances of obtaining a sense of fulfillment from your career and financial success. Here are a few things to think about as you make this decision.

What are your passions and interests?
While it doesn't hold true in all circumstances, in general people excel in things they enjoy. One reason is because they are willing to spend the time and effort to improve their skills in that area. Make a list of at least twenty things that you enjoy doing. Don't edit your thoughts; just write down whatever comes to mind. Include activities from all areas of your life: hobbies, past jobs, prior accomplishments, or family life.

What kind of lifestyle do you want?
Each job comes with a different set of expectations and demands on your lifestyle. If you would like to have more days off but longer working days, consider medicine. If you'd rather not travel, international relations might not be a good fit for you. If you want to have a family and one parent would like to stay home with the kids, you will need to choose a major that will support a career that will pay enough to support your family on one income.

What values do you hold?
If you hold to a certain creed or set of beliefs that would eliminate a portion of the job sector, think about what ramifications this will have on your course of study. For example, if you are a big supporter of the non-profit sector, you might consider a degree in non-profit management or business. If you have benefited from social services and would like to propagate them, you might consider sociology. It may be difficult to make this determination without first exploring the degree choices first. Make a list of five or so majors that intrigue you, and then see if you can set up an interview with professionals or professors in that field before you make your selection.

How much money do you want to make?
If you are okay renting, sharing a home, or living in a condo or smaller house, then you will have more choices when it comes to a career path. However, if you envision your future in an upper-scale neighborhood with your kids going to a private school and your spouse staying home, you will need to consider into your choice the jobs that pay more. Keep in mind also that certain positions might not exist in a few years (a la the VHS repairman), or that there may be more opportunities in the future (recently, technology, social networking and blogging have created more employment opportunities).
What do you excel in?

Finally, you need to consider what you do well in. While it is possible to increase your skills in any given area, it is more likely that you will succeed by building on strengths that you already have. If you are unsure of what your strengths are, consider informally interviewing friends, colleagues, teachers, or family. By talking to a number of people from different areas of your life, you will be able to get a more accurate sense of what areas you will have a greater chance at succeeding in.
