Progeria is a fatal genetic disorder that occurs in children and leads to fast ageing. This disease is extremely rare and only 53 known cases are found all over the world. This progressive ageing starts after 12 months of age such as hair loss, changes in skin elasticity. Progeria is also referred as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. With this disease child can live upto the age of 13 but many children die before 13 or live upto 20 years. There is no cure for this disease but research is continuously going on for the treatment.

Signs and symptoms of Progeria:
Children born with this disease usually look normal in the initial few months but gradually signs and symptoms start after 12 months. Apart from mental development there is a retardation of growth and weight. Doctor consultation is required when child's appearance doesn't look normal with slow height development. Progeria patients usually die between 8 and 21years of age.

Some of the major signs and symptoms of Progeria include:
- Growth retardation, below-average weight and height
- A beaked nose and narrowed face makes the child appearance old
- Fast hair loss including eyebrows and eyelashes.
- Tightening of skin on extremities and trunk.
- Loosening of skin elasticity
- Large head with prominent veins.

Causes of Progeria:
Major cause of Projeria is due gene mutation that encodes Lamin A. Due to defective Lamin A leads to Instability of the nucleus that lead to the premature, progressive aging I in Progeria patients.

Complications:
Children suffering from Progeria commonly develop cardiovascular disease due to severe atherosclerosis. Heart disease stroke, angina, hypertension, heart failure and enlarged heart are the leading cause of death for these children. Heart problem with the blood vessels results in congestive heart failure and heart attack. Problems brain artery resulting in stroke. Other health problems are aging related such as shortsightedness, Alzheimer's disease and osteoarthritis.

Tests and diagnosis
There is no diagnostic test for Progeria. Doctors usually diagnose on the basis of signs and symptoms such as hair loss and stunted growth at the age of 2. Sooner doctor can prescribe treatments; the sooner you got to know that your child has progeria, which may help to some extent to suppress the signs and symptoms of the Progeria.

Treatments:
Progeria is a fatal disease and there is no cure. Patient is treated symptomatically with frequent monitoring for cardiovascular disease that may improve child's condition to some extent.

Some therapies may decrease some of the signs and symptoms:

- Occupational and Physical therapy: These may help with osteoarthritis and prevent bone stiffness.
- Good dietary supplements: Proper maintenance of calorie chart that includes high calorie diet may stop weight loss and check adequate nutrition.
- Feeding tube: Those children who cannot eat food properly can be given through syringe or Ryle's tube.
- Primary teeth extraction: In Progeria children permanent teeth come out before baby teeth fall out. So problems related to delayed baby teeth loss can be easily managed with teeth extraction.
