IQ testing is pretty well known in our culture. While not everyone has had their IQ tested, the term 'IQ' has become part of our vernacular. An IQ level can tell us the intellectual level of different people, but it has been faced with some criticism when it comes to application in the real world. While IQ gives us a sense of the person's ability in the realm of the academic, it is possible to have people who are extremely intelligent, but who lack the ability to function well in relationships. The response to this problem is what is called the EQ: Emotional Quotient.

The EQ measures a person's ability to deal with relational issues, as well as their visceral response to life situations. Though a person may have the IQ to be able to understand what it going on, it is their EQ that determines how they will put into action what they have thought about, and whether or not they will have the emotional stamina to survive without long-term consequences.

Despite cultural stereotypes to the contrary, as a general rule women tend to score higher on the EQ tests. Though women have their cycles that make some of them a bit more emotionally fragile (okay, a lot more emotionally fragile), overall they are able to process their emotions in other situations through their network of friends and their tendency to talk more.

A network of friends is important because it enables women to have a group of people with whom they travel through their life with. While men also have friendships, they interact with them differently (how many guys do you see hanging out on a Friday night talking about the intricacies of their relationships and exchanging advice on how to strengthen them?). The way that women choose to spend their time with their friends makes a big impact on their ability to process their thoughts.

Another aspect of a woman's life that increases her emotional intelligence is her tendency to talk more. Women in general use (STATISTIC) as many words as men do on a daily basis. While one could argue that this difference may have something to say about the content of what is discussed (i.e. guys cut to the chase while women dance around the issue or talk about non-essentials), the time that a woman spends chatting about 'non-essentials' helps to solidify the relationship that she has with her friends. It also gives her clues as to whether or not it is appropriate to delve into certain topics. Most of the time, this discernment is going on in the background; the woman isn't consciously thinking about whether or not it is appropriate to ask her friends about her issues or to share the details of her latest fight with her boyfriend.

While it seems like women may have the advantage when it comes to emotional intelligence, men still have an opportunity to raise their EQ. By becoming more aware of what is going around themselves and observing their own emotional states, both men and women can sharpen their EQ.
